DETROIT – A crash involving a stolen truck left one driver hospitalized after a teenage suspect fled a traffic stop attempt by the Michigan State Police.
The crash occurred on Sunday (April 19) around 5 a.m. near Outer Drive and Evergreen Road on Detroit’s west side.
Police said a trooper attempted to pull over a stolen truck on Outer Drive near Schoolcraft Road, but the driver, identified as a 15-year-old, did not stop.
Officials said the teen ran a red light and continued on Evergreen Road.
The trooper did not pursue the vehicle, in accordance with department policy that restricts chases unless there is probable cause to believe a violent felony has occurred.
Shortly afterward, the trooper came upon the aftermath of a crash in which the stolen truck struck another vehicle, then crashed into a nearby home and caught fire.
The homeowner, Warren Scott, said the impact was so severe that it knocked the house off its foundation and trapped him inside.
“I got up and tried to open up the door. I heard people kind of screaming, but I couldn’t get out of my front door because the impact of the crash actually jammed the door shut,” said Scott.
MSP said the 15-year-old driver was treated at a hospital for a minor head injury and released to his mother pending charges from the prosecutor’s office.
The driver of the other vehicle was hospitalized. Authorities have not released an update on that person’s condition.
The crash remains under investigation.
