Surveillance video leads to charges in Royal Oak Township church shooting

Police said no injuries were reported and no suspects were immediately identified at the scene

OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. – Oakland County Prosecutor Karen D. McDonald has charged a Detroit man in connection with a shooting at a church in Royal Oak Township.

Michael Tyrone Bowers III, 23, was charged with discharging a firearm from a vehicle, discharging a firearm in or at a building, and two counts of felony firearm.

Authorities allege Bowers fired shots at God’s Grace Missionary Baptist Church on Thursday, April 16.

The Michigan State Police responded to a report of gunfire and found bullet holes in the church entryway and a shell casing nearby.

Investigators said surveillance video indicated the vehicle used in the shooting was linked to Bowers.

Discharging a firearm from a vehicle and discharging a firearm in or at a building are each punishable by up to 10 years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine.

Each felony firearm count carries a mandatory two-year prison sentence to be served consecutively with any other sentence.
