4 rescued after boat capsizes in Detroit River near Gordie Howe Bridge

All 4 people brought safely back to boat launch

DETROIT – Four people were rescued Tuesday morning after a boat capsized in the Detroit River near the Gordie Howe International Bridge.

Bob Grimes, a retired police sergeant who helped with the rescue, said he was heading back in when he spotted an overturned boat in the water and another boat about 100 yards away from it, sitting upright against the seawall.

He said there was someone in the water, but the group in the other boat wasn’t able to pull them out because their boat was too tall.

Grimes went over to help and was able to get the fourth person out of the river and into his boat.

All four were brought safely back to shore at a boat launch near Delray Park.

One man was taken to the hospital, and the other three were treated at the scene but refused transport, according to the fire department.

Coast Guard, police and fire officials responded to the scene.

The Coast Guard is urging people to check weather conditions before heading out. While air temperatures are warming, the water remains dangerously cold, and falling in could pose a serious risk.
