OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. – A Holly family says they found a festering, fungus-filled tree stump under their manufactured home.
It sits straight beneath their children’s bedroom.
The park had it tested, but the family says they won’t share the results
The Sanford family moved into their home at Oak Hill Estates in 2023.
In 2024, they decided to buy their house.
The parents of three kids hadn’t had many issues until late March, when they removed part of the siding and found a tree stump covered in growths.
“We didn’t know sooner, so we didn’t do anything, because of how sick our kids have been,” mom Alexa Sanford said.
They discovered it on March 30.
“They cut a tree down and then cut a piece of it off, so that the frame of the house could sit there, and it’s growing a lot of things,” she said. “Once you open this, it’s just the smell punches you in the face.”
Feeling worried, she immediately emailed, and the community’s maintenance team came out to check.
The Sanford family cameras caught it.
They say the maintenance team said the stump might be causing mold on the underbelly of their home.
The community tested it, but the Sanfords say they have not been able to see those results.
“In like so many words, if we wanted to know what was under there, we had to pay for it ourselves,” Sanford said.
That’s what they did; they tested on their own.
“In my son’s room, the one that was on oxygen, there were hyphal fragments. From what I’ve looked up, that’s pieces of actual fungus or a growth,” Sanford said.
The community says they will remove the stump, but they are waiting for the right part, and it’s been over a month.
Local 4 went to the community’s office to ask about the stump removal and the test results.
We were asked to email or call the corporate line and did both.
Local 4 had previously reached out to the company’s online corporate portal.
“Why? I think it was just something so simple,” Sanford said. “Like, you guys could have just pulled it out.”
