A Highland Park teenager has been sentenced in the 2025 fatal shooting of a 13-year-old boy from Detroit.
The teenager was sentenced on Monday (May 25) to Level 2 probation and a delayed prison sentence of 25 to 50 years with the Michigan Department of Corrections after being convicted of second-degree murder in the 2025 fatal shooting.

The shooting
The incident occurred on Nov. 25, 2025, at around 3:43 p.m., Highland Park police officers were dispatched to a dollar store in the 14100 block of Woodward Avenue for a reported shooting.
Officers arriving on scene said they located the victim in the parking lot suffering from a gunshot wound to the back.
Medics transported the 13-year-old to a Metro Detroit hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Police allege the 16-year-old produced a handgun, fired multiple times, and fatally wounded the victim before fleeing the scene.
The investigation and charges
The Highland Park Police Department, with assistance from the Michigan State Police, investigated the case and arrested the 16-year-old on Dec. 7, 2025.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged the teen, not as an adult defendant, but as an adult designee, with first-degree murder.
A preliminary hearing was held Dec. 13, 2025, at the Juvenile Detention Facility.
