Oakland County, Mich. – An man is facing the possibility of life in prison on allegations that he strangled his “on-again, off again” girlfriend, leading her to text a family member for help in Oakland County.

Oakland County prosecutors charged Ricky Kahil McLaurin with assault with intent to murder and domestic violence, third offense.

The 47-year-old Detroit man allegedly battered and strangled the woman while threatening to kill her.

The woman reportedly texted a family member for help, and that family member then called the police.

“This victim sought help, and that may have saved her life,” Oakand County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said. “Women suffering domestic abuse are not alone. Resources and support are available to help victims escape abusive relationships.”

Authorities say McLaurin later turned himself in to the Southfield Police Department.

Assault with intent to murder is punishable by any term of years in prison, up to life.

Domestic violence, third offense, is punishable by up to five years in prison and/or a $5,000 fine.
