ICE abandons Romulus immigration detention center plan after AG Dana Nessel lawsuit
Federal immigration officials have abandoned plans to convert a warehouse in Romulus into an immigration detention center and instead will sell the property, a decision that follows a lawsuit filed by Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel challenging the project.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement purchased the warehouse at 7525 Cogswell St. in February without public notice and intended to convert the facility into a detention center capable of housing hundreds of detainees.
Nessel and the city of Romulus filed suit on March 24 against ICE and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, arguing the site was unsuitable and that federal officials failed to follow required legal and environmental review processes.
Popular waterfront event venue reopens after devastating fire forced months-long closure in Macomb County
A popular waterfront event venue in Macomb County reopened after an electrical fire earlier this year forced the facility to close for months and undergo extensive repairs.
MacRay Harbor welcomed guests back Thursday evening (June 18) during a grand reopening celebration held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., marking the first time the event center has been open since an April fire caused significant structural and water damage.
The fire forced the venue to shut down and reschedule approximately 65 already-booked events, according to management.
30 years later: JonBenét Ramsey’s father to share family’s story at crime unfiltered event in Royal Oak
For nearly three decades, the murder of 6-year-old JonBenét Ramsey has remained one of America’s most infamous unsolved cases. But for her family, it wasn’t just a headline.
In the aftermath of JonBenét’s death, John and Patsy Ramsey found themselves under intense scrutiny, facing a media firestorm while grieving the loss of their daughter.
John says that’s part of why he’s participating in Crime Unfiltered at the Royal Oak Music Theater on Friday, June 19. He wants to share his family’s story in his own words and give people a chance to hear from those who lived through some of the nation’s most high-profile criminal cases.
The event will also feature Tara Petito and Nichole Schmidt, the mother and stepmother of Gabby Petito, as well as others whose lives have been forever changed.
Weather: Beautiful Juneteenth ahead of rain chances this weekend in Metro Detroit
Southeast Michigan will have great weather Friday before seeing rain arrive this weekend. We’ll reach afternoon highs near 75 degrees and see plenty of sunshine today — wonderful weather for any Juneteenth parades, celebrations, and community events.
We’ll see some sun Saturday with highs in the mid-70s, but spotty showers will move through the area to start the weekend. A few rumbles of thunder will also be possible. It won’t be an all-day washout, just keep in mind there will be a chance for rain throughout the day, and most will stay dry.
