DETROIT – A barricaded gunman situation ended peacefully after Detroit police negotiated the surrender of a 39-year-old man who allegedly fired shots during an attempted eviction.
Detroit police Deputy Chief Arnold Williams said officers received a call around 12:40 p.m. on Tuesday (June 30) on the city’s west side, reporting shots fired in the 18,000 block of Stoepel Street.
According to police, bailiffs were at the location attempting to serve an eviction notice when they were fired upon by a person inside the home.
Officers arrived, secured the area, and declared a barricaded gunman situation.
Members of the Detroit Police Department’s Special Response Team, the 12th Precinct and other units responded to assist.
Williams said members of the department’s Crisis Negotiation Team were able to communicate with the 39-year-old man inside the home and ultimately get him to surrender peacefully.
Police said the man had been staying at the home for about one to two months.
Williams said he had no additional details about the circumstances surrounding the eviction.
A shelter-in-place order was issued for nearby residents during the incident.
Williams said there was no longer an active threat but asked residents to continue following police instructions until the area was cleared.
“When we do put a shelter in place out through social media or other means, we ask the people abide by that,” Williams said. “It’s for their safety.”
Williams also thanked officers who responded, noting that many had been working outside in extreme heat since the incident began.
Police have not released the identity of the person involved or announced whether any charges have been filed. Further details are expected as the investigation continues.
