2 in custody after fatal Fairlane Town Center shooting leaves two dead, another injured in Dearborn

No charges had been announced as of Friday evening

DEARBORN, Mich. – Two people are in custody in connection with the fatal shooting that left two people dead and another injured inside Fairlane Town Center, Dearborn police announced.

Police said investigators quickly identified two individuals believed to be involved in the shooting on Friday (July 3), and both are being held at the Dearborn Police Department.

No charges had been announced as of Friday evening.

The shooting occurred at about 1:25 p.m. inside the shopping mall near Michigan Avenue and Evergreen Road.

Officers responding to reports of gunfire found three people who had been shot.

One person died at the scene, and a second victim died after being taken to a Metro Detroit hospital.

Police said a third person suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The victims ranged in age from their late teens to early 20s, police said.

Police said the shooting stemmed from a dispute between two groups that escalated into gunfire.

Officials emphasized the violence was an isolated incident and not a random attack.

Police said detectives continue to interview witnesses, review evidence, and work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Earlier Friday, officials said all three people who were shot are believed to have been involved in the dispute.

The mall was closed for several hours while investigators processed the scene.

Police have not released the identities of the victims or the two people in custody.
