TAYLOR, Mich. – Taylor police are investigating the fatal stabbing of a 25-year-old man outside an apartment complex early Thursday, and a 26-year-old Detroit woman is in custody.
Officers were called around 4:15 a.m. to the Taylor Park Townhomes in the 11300 block of Elm Street, where they found the man dead next to his vehicle in the parking lot.
Taylor police say the suspect initially tried to flee after officers located her vehicle in Detroit.
Police say she abandoned her vehicle a short time later and was found hiding in bushes in the backyard of a home after Michigan State Police used a K-9 to track her.
“She had fled from officers in her vehicle. We were unmarked, so we did not pursue,” Taylor Police Det. Lt. Joshua Schneider said. “We located her vehicle abandoned a few minutes later, we set up a perimeter on that location and contacted Michigan State Police K-9, who responded to the scene.”
Security video from homes in the area showed troopers and a K-9 searching through yards as officers worked to find her.
Karly Beaupre, who works at Duffy’s Den located down the street from the arrest scene, said the incident hit close to home.
“It’s just very scary; you don’t think something like this is going to happen in your backyard,” said Beaupre.
Neighbors said the street was surrounded by police, and many didn’t learn for hours that the arrest was tied to a homicide investigation.
“That’s what’s mind-boggling,” Beaupre said.
Schneider said investigators believe the stabbing may be domestic-related because the suspect has a prior history of domestic disputes, but detectives are still working to determine what led up to the incident.
He said neither the victim nor the suspect has any known connection to the apartment complex.
An autopsy has been ordered by the Wayne County Medical Examiner, and police said the weapon has not been found. Detectives are seeking search warrants as the investigation continues.
