Detroit man pleads guilty in accidental shooting death of 13-year-old sister

CANTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A 25-year-old Detroit man facing multiple charges stemming from the accidental shooting death of his 13-year-old sister last year has pleaded guilty to two counts in the case.

Police say that Jay-Veon McKinney was playing with two handguns at a Canton Township apartment on July 29 when one of them discharged, striking his sister in the chest.

Emergency personnel arrived within minutes and attempted to save her, police said, but she succumbed to her injuries and died at the scene.

The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office charged McKinney with involuntary manslaughter, felony firearm and discharging a firearm causing injury or death on Aug. 1, stating that the shooting was a result of “gross negligence in handling a loaded firearm.”

McKinney pleaded guilty on June 24 to the involuntary manslaughter and felony firearm charges. The third count for discharging a firearm causing injury or death was dismissed.

He’s scheduled to be sentenced at 8:30 a.m. July 22 in the 3rd Circuit Court in Wayne County.
