ROMULUS, Mich. – Plans for a proposed cigar lounge at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport have been scrapped, with airport officials citing economic uncertainty following Spirit Airlines’ closure.

Wayne County Airport Authority CEO Chad Newton announced during Wednesday’s (July 15) Board of Directors meeting that the authority has canceled its request for proposals (RFP) for a bar lounge concept at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport.

The RFP, issued Oct. 1, 2025, sought proposals for a concession featuring food service, retail cigar sales and an enclosed cigar-smoking area.

The proposal required bidders to include a state-of-the-art air-handling and ventilation system designed to minimize smoke exposure.

Newton said the decision came after airport executives completed an extensive review of the proposed concession.

“I have accepted the recommendations from my key executives tasked to conduct due diligence on the cigar lounge concession concept,” Newton said in a statement. “After extensive analysis, they concluded that in light of the temporary financial and economic uncertainty caused by the closure of Spirit Airlines, now is not the time to promote novel or untested concessions at DTW.”

Newton said he agreed with the recommendation and directed that the request for proposals be canceled.
