Thunder over Michigan returns with sold-out drive-in airshow featuring Blue Angels, Thunderbirds
Thunder over Michigan - the state’s largest airshow - hosted a sold-out crowd of drive-in guests for both morning and afternoon shows. For the first time in state history, both the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds flight demonstration teams performed at the same show. The Blue Angels headlined the morning show with their new FA-18 Super Hornet aircraft, which replaced the smaller “legacy” Hornet aircraft for the 2021 season. The afternoon show featured the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and the A-10 Thunderbolt II demonstration team. More than $15M in federal funds coming to Willow Run Airport for improvements
Willow Run Airport is receiving the $15,275,685 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation, U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell, D-Dearborn has announced. “Willow Run Airport is a critical gateway for our local economy in Ypsilanti and Washtenaw (County), as well as throughout the entire tri-county area,” Dingell said in a statement. This grant will significantly assist with the modernization of Willow Run Airport to ensure it continues to meet the community’s needs, officials said. “The Wayne County Airport Authority appreciates the support of Michigan’s congressional leaders, who are advocates for the infrastructure and safety needs of Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport and Willow Run Airport,” said Erica Donerson, Wayne County Airport Authority spokeswoman. Michigan women’s basketball team forced to make emergency landing after losing pressure
UPDATE: Michigan’s women’s basketball team arrived back in Michigan Sunday morning, landing at Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti at 5:54 a.m., according to team spokesperson Sarah VanMetre. Plane makes emergency landing at Willow Run airport due to mechanical issues
VAN BUREN TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A small airplane made an emergency landing early Sunday morning at Willow Run Airport. According to authorities, the small aircraft was experiencing mechanical issues and its landing gear did not come down, causing the plane to leave the runway just after midnight. Authorities said the two people onboard were able to exit safely and were unharmed. The investigation into what went wrong is ongoing.
$10 million grant will go toward runway improvements at Willow Run Airport
YPSILANTI, MI — Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti and Van Buren townships is being awarded a $10 million federal grant from the Department of Transportation, officials announced. The Federal Aviation Administration grant is supplemented by funding that U.S. Sen. Gary Peters, D-Bloomfield Township, and U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Lansing, helped enact through a government funding bill. The funding will go towards infrastructure improvements, including construction on a runway. The improvements include the decoupling of Runways 23L and 27, reconstruction of Runway 9/27 and the construction of Taxiway A parallel to Runway 5R/23L. Investing in Willow Run will support economic development in the region, Stabenow said.mlive.com
Plane goes off runway at Willow Run Airport, no injuries reported
VAN BUREN TOWNSHIP, Mich. Authorities are investigating after an aircraft went off the runway at Willow Run Airport. It happened at about 2 p.m. Wednesday. No injuries were reported. According to authorities, the pilot of a DC9 aborted during takeoff, but the plane did not crash. No injuries or damages have been reported.
Storms bring down trees, power lines across Metro Detroit
DETROIT Powerful storms came through Michigan Sunday, bringing town trees, power lines and even taking the roof off a fire station at Willow Run Airport. There were no reported injuries at Willow Run Airport. Damage is all over Metro Detroit -- in Washtenaw, Oakland and Macomb counties, even in Detroit. The storm caused a power surge on Detroits west side that lit a nearby business on fire. DTE Energy said the company has more than 300 workers busy as more than 100,000 customers have lost power.
