VAN BUREN TOWNSHIP, MI – A pedestrian was fatally struck by a vehicle and then hit several more times Tuesday night while crossing westbound I-94 in Van Buren Township, police said. Around 8 p.m. Tuesday, dispatchers were advised of an object that had been struck in the roadway and caused a crash in the area of I-94 and Haggerty, Michigan State Police Second District said in a news release. Upon arrival, troopers determined the object was a body, which had been struck multiple times. The original vehicle that struck the victim pulled off the freeway at Belleville Road, police said. The medical examiner determined that the victim was a male from Van Buren Township, police said.

Michigan man arrested for sex assault, torture found with 7 untreated gunshot wounds

VAN BUREN TOWNSHIP, MI – A man wanted for sexual assault and torture was arrested by the U.S. Marshals when they found him suffering from seven untreated gunshot wounds, officials said. Dekenta Parchman, 30, is accused of a sexually assaulting and torturing his ex-girlfriend at her Van Buren Township apartment in late July, FOX 2 Detroit reports. Marshals suffering from gunshot wounds allegedly sustained in a shootout in Inkster, the report said. Parchman was arraigned Tuesday, Aug. 9, in Wayne County court on charges of torture, assault with intent to do bodily harm less than murder, two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, unlawful driving away and aggravated domestic violence, according to the Wayne County inmate lookup.

Driver killed in crash with utility pole in Ypsilanti Township

YPSILANTI TWP., MI – A Van Buren Township man was killed Saturday morning when his car left the road and hit a utility pole in Ypsilanti Township. Crews arrived to find the driver, 42, who was pronounced dead at the scene. He was the only occupant in the vehicle and the only car involved in the crash, police said. The crash is still under investigation, but it is believed the driver was going west on Martz Road when he crossed the centerline into oncoming traffic before crashing into the utility pole and rolling into the ditch on the south side of the road, police said. Investigators are awaiting a report from the Washtenaw County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine if a medical condition, drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash, police said.

A 19-year-old Van Buren Township resident, who was riding as a passenger in the G6, was killed in the crash, authorities said. Sheffield is a patient at the center and disappeared then after getting into a green Ford Flex with two other Black womenShe is described as Black with braided black hair, 5 feet, 7 inches tall, and weighs 227 pounds. Police do not have information on what she was wearing at the time. Police warned that Sheffield is vulnerable to risky behavior due to mental health issues that include a closed head injury and schizophrenia. 3rd suspect charged with murder, home invasion in Egypt Covington’s death

A third suspect has been formally charged with murder in the 2017 killing of Van Buren Township woman Egypt Covington. Shandon Ray Groom, a 28-year-old from Toledo was charged Thursday with murder and home invasion three years after Covington was found bound and shot in her home. Stolen vehicle thought to be ‘traveling under its own power’ recovered by state police

VAN BUREN TOWNSHIP, MI - A stolen vehicle believed to be traveling “under its own power” last week led state police to a trailer loaded with vehicles stolen from the Detroit-area. Michigan State Police troopers from the Metro Detroit Post recovered at least four stolen vehicles being hauled on a trailer when they responded to a stolen vehicle report on Wednesday, Oct. 21, state police said in a news release via Twitter. Around 9:55 p.m. Wednesday, a citizen called 911 to report their vehicle stolen, police said. However, they found a car hauling trailer and could see the license plate of the stolen vehicle. The search found a 2017 Dodge Challenger reported stolen in Detroit, a 2020 Dodge Charger reported stolen from Warren and a 2018 Dodge Charger stolen from Southfield.

Second commissioner resigns from group redrawing Michigan’s electoral lines

The 13-member Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission is looking for a replacement again, as Van Buren Township’s Glenn Shaw has resigned. Shaw, 71, was selected at random to join the commission in September to fill the spot of James Decker, who resigned. The commission is result of a 2018 proposal passed by Michigan voters, creating a group to redraw Michigan’s state and federal electoral boundaries fairly. Shaw was unaffiliated with either party – so his replacement must not be affiliated, either. Wayne County township paying the postage on absentee ballots returned by mail

VAN BUREN TWP., MI - A Michigan township will pay absentee ballot return postage for its residents ahead of the November 2020 election. “We want to make voting accessible for all residents,” Township Clerk Leon Wright said in a statement. In Van Buren Township, there have been 8,650 absentee ballot requests in the township so far out of 24,113 registered voters, Albrecht said. In Michigan, about 2.4 million voters have requested absentee ballots ahead of the November election. It said “thousands” of absentee ballots were dropped off the day before and the day of the August primary election and encouraged residents to mail in or drop off ballots earlier.

Wayne County Judge David Parrott charged with assaulting his girlfriend

ShutterstockA Wayne County district judge was charged Monday with domestic violence after police arrested him Saturday night following a dispute with his girlfriend at their Van Buren Township home.Judge David Parrott of the 34th District Court in Romulus is accused of assaulting the 55-year-old woman, causing a bump on her head, a cut on her hand, and pain in her tailbone, the Wayne County Prosecutors Office said.Police were called to the home at 7:10 p.m. Saturday. After a brief investigation at the home, Parrott, 59, was arrested.Parrott is expected to be arraigned Monday afternoon, when a bond will be set.
