BERKLEY, Mich. – E-bikes are getting more popular around Metro Detroit, and confusion is growing about where people can ride them.
Berkley City Council is making it clear: e-bikes aren’t allowed on sidewalks in the city.
Opposition to the ban is growing, with some residents saying the new ordinance goes too far. The city said it’s trying to keep people safe, especially kids and older adults.
On Aug. 17, Berkley City Council voted to ban e-bikes and high-powered moped-like devices from being used on any sidewalk in the city.
Residents will only be allowed to ride e-bikes on the street or walk them on the sidewalk.
Outside of downtown Berkley, residents can still ride their traditional bicycle on the sidewalk.
The city said it will run an education campaign, especially as schools start, to help people get familiar with the rules.
The city also said it is not focused on punishing riders but is looking for compliance to keep people safe. The new ordinance goes into effect in 30 days.
