‘If you see something, say it’: Ceasefire Detroit asks witnesses in quadruple shooting of family to speak up

The organization works to prevent gun violence, community violence, gang violence, and group violence in Detroit

DETROIT – Ceasefire Detroit is urging members of the community to speak up after a quadruple shooting that injured a mother, her 10-year-old son, and their two relatives.

The shooting, which occurred on Friday (Aug. 21) before 6 p.m. in the 3700 block of Haverhill Street, critically injured a mother in her 20s, her 10-year-old son, and two relatives: a man in his 40s and a 40-year-old woman.

Tamara Smith, a program manager with Ceasefire Detroit, said the organization responded to the scene as part of its emergency response efforts.

Ceasefire Detroit works to prevent gun violence, community violence, gang violence and group violence in Detroit.

Smith said the organization has a notification network that allows its team to respond quickly to incidents and assist first responders.

“Our job is to make sure that we engage with the community to de-escalate if there is any additional confusion,” Smith said.

Smith said the shooting is a reminder of the dangers of gun violence, particularly when children are involved.

“Guns are serious. These bullets are serious,” Smith said. “You never know when you’re shooting into a home or just firing a gun, who you’re going to harm.”

Smith said Ceasefire Detroit will continue community and street engagement efforts to discourage gun violence and encourage residents to work together to make Detroit safer.

“We always say ‘One Detroit,’ and we want to get everybody to understand this is one Detroit,” Smith said. “We want Detroit to be safe.”

Smith also urged anyone who witnessed the shooting or has information about it to come forward, including through anonymous tips.

She acknowledged that some young people may be reluctant to provide information because of a perceived “no-snitch” culture.

Still, she said speaking up is critical to helping investigators solve violent crimes.

“This is not a time to keep a silent voice,” Smith said. “If you see something, say it.”

Smith said residents can provide anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.

The investigation remains ongoing.

“Early this evening, four people were injured by gunfire in a drive-by shooting on Haverhill street.

According to DPD, of the three adult victims, two have non-life threatening injuries, but a young woman is in critical condition.

Our thoughts are with her and her family at this difficult time as we pray for her recovery.

The youngest victim, who by the grace of God was not seriously injured, is a 10-year-old boy.

This senseless and indiscriminate violence should never reach a young child and will not be tolerated.

DPD will find those responsible for this heinous crime and we will ensure justice is served.

If you know anything, please call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP or DPD at 313-596-2260."
