SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. – South Haven Public Schools canceled Friday night’s Homecoming festivities, including the parade and football game, because of a local industrial fire and widespread power outages.
The Homecoming parade, scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25, and the football game that followed were both canceled.
School officials said they decided because of circumstances beyond their control and out of concern for the safety of students and community members.
“We have been advised to make this decision,” the district said in a message to parents, students and community members.
The city also reported that the Dyckman Bridge currently has no power.
Staff cannot operate the bridge until power is restored.
Officials said the area is experiencing mass power outages related to the industrial fire, and there is currently no estimated time for power to be restored.
Residents and visitors are asked to avoid the area around Stieve Drive while emergency crews respond.
South Haven Public Schools said more information about whether the Homecoming events can be rescheduled will be available by 9 a.m. Saturday.
