Big Ten football power rankings: Week 1

Michigan, Ohio State occupy top spots

DETROIT – The first full week of college football is in the books, and the Big Ten came away looking like one of the top conferences in the country.

As a whole, the Big Ten went 10-2 out of conference, with two of the conference's traditionally weaker teams losing tough battles to ranked opponents.

Big Ten teams also made waves by knocking off two Power Five teams ranked in the top 25. Two others survived tests against top teams from smaller conferences.

It was an impressive weekend for the conference as a whole, but here's a look at how the teams stack up individually.

1. Michigan Wolverines

Result: Michigan 33, Florida 17

The reason we don't do preseason power rankings is because we never truly know what to expect from teams until they play. That way, there's a clean slate and the power rankings can be determined solely based on results.

No Big Ten team picked up a bigger win than Michigan, which dominated the two-time defending SEC East champions. The Wolverines won by 16 points, but the game wasn't that close. Michigan more than doubled Florida's offensive output, gaining 433 yards and holding the Gators to 192 yards.

Michigan shut down Florida's running game, allowing just 11 yards on the ground. Conversely, Ty Isaac led a rushing attack that picked up 215 yards for the Wolverines.

All the talks about Michigan rebuilding have gone out the window with this performance.

2. Ohio State Buckeyes

Result: Ohio State 49, Indiana 21

It took 30 minutes of underwhelming football, but Ohio State proved how explosive it can be with a 22-point third quarter to bury Indiana in a strange week-one conference opener.

The Hoosiers took a 21-20 lead with under five minutes left in the third quarter, but the Buckeyes stormed back with four unanswered touchdowns to win running away.

Indiana isn't a blue blood, but winning in Bloomington has been a challenge for years. To trail in the third quarter and come away with a 28-point win was impressive for Urban Meyer's team.

3. Maryland Terrapins

Result: Maryland 51, Texas 41

I don't think Maryland is one of the three best teams in the Big Ten, but in terms of quality wins this weekend, the Terps made a big opening statement.

Texas entered the year with high hopes under first-year head coach Tom Herman, but Maryland dashed them by dropping 51 points on the Longhorns in front a shocked home crowd.

Maryland gave up 473 yards, and the injury to quarterback Tyrrell Pigrome hurts the offense, but for now D.J. Durkin's team is feeling good.

4. Penn State Nittany Lions

Result: Penn State 51, Akron 0

Penn State is expected to be the top challenger to Ohio State in the Big Ten East this season, and the Nittany Lions got off to an almost perfect start. They crushed Akron, which went 5-7 last season, by 51 points and the defense pitched a shutout.

Saquon Barkley continued to be a star, rushing 14 times for 172 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Trace McSorley completed 18 of 25 passes for 280 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 48 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries.

5. Iowa Hawkeyes

Result: Iowa 24, Wyoming 3

A casual college football fan might wonder why the Hawkeyes are ranked so highly after week one, and it's because of what the defense did against a potential first-round NFL draft pick.

Josh Allen is one of the top pro quarterback prospects in the country, coming off a year in which he threw for 3,203 yards, 28 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. Iowa held Allen to just 23 completions in 40 attempts for 174 yards and two interceptions.

If the Hawkeyes have a dominant defense, that will be enough to contend in the shallow Big Ten West.

6. Wisconsin Badgers

Result: Wisconsin 59, Utah State 10

A quick glance at the scoreboard will show that Wisconsin beat Utah State by 49 points, but the game was tied 10-10 at halftime in Madison.

The Badgers are the runaway favorites in the Big Ten West, especially with the Iowa and Michigan games at home and no matchups against Penn State or Ohio State. But there are questions about quarterback Alex Hornibrook and the offense.

Wisconsin finished the game with 478 yards of offense, but we might not get a great read on this team until Oct. 7 in Nebraska.

7. Michigan State Spartans

Result: Michigan State 35, Bowling Green 10

When the Spartans drove all the way down the field on their opening drive only to fumble at the one-yard line, some fans had to be thinking, "Oh no, not again." After a three-win year and a tumultuous offseason, Michigan State comes into the season as a major unknown.

But the first game went smoothly after the opening minutes, as the Spartans ran away from the Falcons with 35 straight points in the middle quarters. New starting quarterback Brian Lewerke completed 22 of 33 passes for 250 yards and three touchdowns.

L.J. Scott's fumble issues are a concern, but the Spartans got a much-needed win as a grueling stretch begins at home against Western Michigan.

8. Northwestern Wildcats

Result: Northwestern 31, Nevada 20

Northwestern, like Wisconsin, struggled against a lesser opponent in the first half, trailing 17-7 at the break in Evanston.

But Clayton Thorson and Justin Jackson came alive in the second half, ripping off 24 points and leading the Wildcats to an easy win. Thorson finished with 352 passing yards, and Jackson rushed 30 times for 109 yards.

9. Nebraska Cornhuskers

Result: Nebraska 43, Arkansas State 36

It felt like a disappointing effort from Nebraska after allowing nearly 500 yards of offense to a Sun Belt team at home, but Arkansas State is a very good Group of Five team, and Nebraska was breaking in several new players at key positions.

Nebraska allowed 497 yards of total offense, including 415 passing yards, to the Red Wolves in a close game. It wasn't a flawless opener, but Tanner Lee looked good as the starting quarterback, and Tre Bryant dominated with 192 rushing yards and a touchdown on 31 carries.

10. Minnesota Golden Gophers

Result: Minnesota 17, Buffalo 7

With all the fanfare surrounding new head coach P.J. Fleck, Minnesota's performance against Buffalo was a huge disappointment.

Fleck didn't inherit a bad team. In fact, the Golden Gophers won nine games last season, and three of their four losses were by a single possession. Buffalo, meanwhile, went 2-10.

Minnesota outgained Buffalo 408-262 in terms of yardage, but overall it was one of the most underwhelming performances in the conference this week.

11. Purdue Boilermakers

Result: Louisville 35, Purdue 28

Purdue is a mainstay near the bottom of Local 4's Big Ten football power rankings, but the Boilermakers represented the conference well in their opener against Louisville.

Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson threw for 378 yards and ran for 107 yards, but Purdue found a way to take a slim lead early in the fourth quarter. Louisville ended up being too much, but it's as competitive as Purdue has been against a ranked team since November 2015.

12. Indiana Hoosiers

Result: Ohio State 49, Indiana 21

Indiana played Ohio State tough for 2 1/2 quarters, but eventually wore down and got crushed in front of an electric home crowd.

Richard Lagow threw for 410 yards, but his trouble with turnovers continued as he threw two picks and lost a fumble. He has to be much more secure with the football if Indiana is to improve.

The main bright spot was Simmie Cobbs Jr., who caught 11 passes for 149 yards and a touchdown.

The Hoosiers have long been a pesky team in the Big Ten, especially in Bloomington, but how long until those close losses turn into victories? Indiana fans are growing frustrated with the near-misses, but the week one matchup was more of the same.

13. Illinois Fighting Illini

Result: Illinois 24, Ball State 21

It was nearly a disaster, but Illinois came back late against Ball State to start the season with a much-needed win.

With just over two minutes left in the game, the Illini trailed by five points. Ball State won just four games last season, so this wasn't an overly encouraging sign for Lovie Smith's squad.

Still, a win is a win, and the schedule gets much tougher from here.

14. Rutgers Scarlett Knights

Result: Washington 30, Rutgers 14

What does it say about Rutgers that it can get beat by 16 points at home and the general vibe is that the team is making drastic improvements?

Chris Ash's team scored first to take a lead against the defending Pac-12 champion, but Washington answered with 27 straight points to put the game out of reach.

Rutgers held the ball for more than 38 minutes and picked up 19 first downs, so there are definitely signs that it won't be a punching bag in the Big Ten this season. But there's still a ways to go.
