DETROIT – Chris Webber, basketball legend and University of Michigan alum, joined Local 4 to discuss the state of basketball in Michigan, including his upcoming “Best of Michigan Basketball Showcase” and the success of both the No. 2-ranked Michigan Wolverines basketball team and the top-seeded Detroit Pistons.
Webber explained that the showcase aims to highlight top talent and coaches in Michigan and the Midwest, bringing back the culture and excitement he experienced in high school.
“I wanted to bring the best talent of Michigan and around the Midwest and have them play in a tournament with all the excitement and culture that I grew up with,” Webber said.
Webber shared that the event, held at the University of Detroit Mercy, will also include educational sessions on topics like NIL, health, and media training to prepare young athletes for the evolving landscape of high school sports.
Reflecting on how much the game has changed since his college days, Webber noted, “Now they’re getting paid to play the game. When I was in high school or college, we led in marketing and branding, but now young people are being paid for it. It’s a wonderful opportunity but also a responsibility.”
Webber praised the current Michigan basketball team’s culture and leadership, highlighting their hard work and heart.
“They put their hard hats on every day. When you have that, you’re supposed to win,” Webber said.
Webber also expressed his excitement about the Detroit Pistons, who are leading the Eastern Conference.
“Detroit is built on resilience and heart,” Webber said. He singled out Cade Cunningham for his impact, skill, and leadership, calling him a strong MVP candidate.
Webber reflected on the challenges players face as they transition to the next level, emphasizing the importance of adapting and maintaining basketball IQ.
“It’s about slowing down the game, playing within the pace, and seeing the double team coming,” Webber said.
Looking ahead to the future of the NBA, Webber believes the next faces of the league will emerge through winning and heart.
He mentioned Cunningham, Jalen Brunson, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander as key players to watch.
Webber also shared a personal note about working alongside longtime friend and fellow “Fab 5″ member Jalen Rose as a college basketball analyst, highlighting their journey from childhood friends to broadcasting partners.
