Jalen Rose: Detroit Pistons have championship backcourt once again

When Jalen Rose thinks about some of the more prosperous periods in Detroit Pistons history, he sees a trend. In the late 60s and early 70s, Detroit had two All Stars in the backcourt, Dave Bing and Jimmy Walker (Rose’s biological father). “I think we now have another All-Star backcourt in Jaden Ivey and Cade Cunningham,” Rose said on Monday (Aug. 22). Rose, a Detroit native, played in the NBA for 13 years and has been an NBA analyst for ESPN since his playing career ended in 2007. “I’m really excited for the potential of our team,” Rose said during his annual golf outing in support of his public charter school in Detroit.

Jack Nicklaus, Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin to play in Ally Challenge Celebrity Shootout

Jack Nicklaus, the greatest champion in golf history, will be taking part in the 2022 Celebrity Shootout, the PGA Tour Champions event announced today. Last year, Nicklaus played in the Celebrity Shootout with Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo, former Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill and golf Hall of Famer Lee Trevino. The Celebrity Shootout contestants will follow the final group of the second round off the 10th hole. Larkin has been the Red Wings captain since 2021, following legends Steve Yzerman, Niklas Lidstrom and Henrik Zetterberg as players who wore the ‘C’ on their jerseys for Detroit. Michigan beats Colorado State with big comeback in NCAA Tournament opener

Michigan overcame a 15-point first-half deficit to beat Colorado State 75-63 on Thursday in the first game of the NCAA Tournament’s first round. Jalen Rose, live on ESPN, shouts for justice for Breonna Taylor

On Thursday, news broke that none of the three officers involved in Breonna Taylor’s death were charged with her killing. A grand jury decided to indict just one officer, on first-degree wanton endangerment charges. Rose appeared on ESPN during halftime of the network’s Thursday night playoff game between the Miami Heat and Boston Celtics. Rose has spoken on social justice issues throughout his time at ESPN and particularly this season. The NBA has been supportive as well, with most players wearing social justice messages, including “Black Lives Matter,” on their jerseys.

Former athletes, sports shows take lead on social justice

Former athletes have a pipeline to advance into sports media as commentators, and many popular shows feature a Black man or woman as a host. Instead, it turned into a forum for players to express their feelings about racial and social issues after practice was canceled. Brown added that athletes who speak out need to be articulate, informed and mindful that their words have staying power. For Rose, the era of athletes sticking to sports is over in part because President Donald Trump hasnt been shy about criticizing NBA and NFL players who disagree with him. If hes acknowledging NFL players who are kneeling and he says, They deserve to be fired, that now becomes a sports topic.

The Juwan Howard Era At Michigan Kicks Off With A Win

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) Juwan Howard felt plenty of support at his first game as Michigans coach. Jon Teske had 17 points and 13 rebounds, and the Wolverines held off Appalachian State 79-71. Howard was welcomed warmly by the home fans, and when Rose appeared on the screen, Howard took a moment to clap along with the crowd. Michigan led 67-37 with about 13 minutes remaining, then Appalachian State went on a 30-5 run. Michigan led 46-25 at halftime.
