JACKSON, MI - One of the largest producers of Braille in the country is eyeing the former home of the Jackson Citizen Patriot as a potential location for expansion of its operations. The Michigan Braille Transcription Fund, which has been housed in a 5,000-square-foot facility at the Cotton Correctional Facility since 1998, is looking at leasing opportunities within Jackson, specifically the former Citizen Patriot building, 214 S. Jackson St. A second production facility was opened in 2021 at the Women’s Huron Valley Correctional Facility. Under the tutelage of prisoner instructors, MBTF Braille transcription trainees undergo a certification process prescribed by the U.S. Library of Congress. Construction of the former Jackson Citizen Patriot building began in 1926, with the North-Moller Co. as general contractor.

The building is the new home of UM’s administrative staff, as the Fleming Administration Building was torn down in August. Michigan has a rich heritage when it comes to the Civil Rights movement and Black history, and current efforts are being made to ensure that it’s not forgotten. Five Michigan projects were recently awarded over $1.4 million in federal grants through the National Park Service 2020 African American Civil Rights program to help restore sites and history related to the African American struggle for equality. “We want to make sure that we have a lot more understanding, not only in our community but for everybody else, too.”One of the preservation projects includes $ 425,959 awarded to the Second Street Baptist Church. “These are the kinds of programs that preservation can help support these black history resources,” Arnold said. Markowicz believes that these projects will help highlight not only the Civil Rights movement, but the issues the Black community continues to face.

DETROIT – The oldest aquarium in the United States is set to reopen this week after being closed for more than a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic - and investing in improvements during that time. Belle Isle Aquarium in Detroit is the oldest aquarium in the country, having opened in August 1904. During the past 16 months, the Belle Isle Conservancy invested $1.2 million into improvements at the aquarium, including upgrading exhibits, stabilizing critical life support systems for the animals, modernizing infrastructure and enhancements to the visitor experience. The aquarium, 3 Inselruhe Ave., will reopen to the public on Saturday, July 16. Belle Isle Park is open year-round 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Albert Kahn Apartments opened to tenants in March, almost two years after Wisconsin-based developer General Capital broke ground at the former Jackson Citizen Patriot building at 214 S. Jackson St. The building is an homage to Albert Kahn, the Michigan architect who designed the Citizen Patriot office, along with the famous Fisher Building in downtown Detroit and the former Detroit Free Press offices.
