University of Michigan fraternity in legal dispute after admitting women, non-binary members
Michigan Sigma Phi’s alumni board told members that the best way to get the policy noticed was to publish the proposal in Sigma Phi’s quarterly newsletter, the Flame. Shortly after, Michigan Sigma Phi elected its first female student president for the 2017-18 school year, according to court records. But Nacht said that Sigma Phi did not go through the necessary vote at the convention to de-charter Michigan Sigma Phi, and they believe the law is clear that Michigan Sigma Phi still has the right to use the name. Michigan Sigma Phi eventually received a cease and desist to stop using the Sigma Phi name, Greek letters or any other intellectual property on UM’s campus because National Sigma Phi did not include Michigan Sigma Phi in its insurance renewal due to “issues related to the actual roster of actives at Michigan Sigma Phi,” according to Nacht’s response. Michigan Sigma Phi obtained insurance coverage in September, but the national chapter still filed the lawsuit, the response says.mlive.com
