Eastern Michigan University professors reach new 4-year labor agreement after 3-day strike
Members of the Eastern Michigan University American Association of University Professors (AAUP) voted 96% in favor of ratifying a new four-year labor agreement which includes significant gains in salary, retirement, and protections for health care coverage.

YPSILANTI, MI - Eastern Michigan University faculty will soon vote on ratifying a new contract that contains salary increases. Pay increases will be as high as 7.4% for the lowest-paid faculty members. Faculty members will receive an increase in retirement contributions commensurate with pay increases; employer retirement contributions will remain at 11% of salary, the EMU-AAUP noted. Health care premiums are defined in the proposed agreement based on an 80/20 cost-sharing model, the faculty union noted. Kuhnke’s Sept. 8 order states she was “not persuaded” the issue needed an immediate ruling. Kuhnke set a hearing for Friday, Sept. 16, where both the union and administration can make arguments about whether to grant the university’s request for a restraining order to stop the strike and send faculty back to class. The EMU chapter of the AAUP, which has roughly 500 members, went on strike a week after the faculty contract expired on Aug. 31. YPSILANTI, MI - More than 500 tenured and tenure track faculty at Eastern Michigan University will go on strike Wednesday, Sept. 7, after its chapter of the American Association of University Professors voted overwhelmingly in favor of the strike Tuesday evening. Eastern Michigan has offered faculty a 6.2% (average) salary increase in the first year of a new contract, and a five-year contract salary increase totaling 15.2%. Other proposals presented by EMU include an enrollment incentive plan wherein the university proposes to increase compensation further, should enrollment levels increase. The University also addressed union concerns by modifying its proposal on summer course compensation, and proposing an equity study of faculty salaries. YPSILANTI, MI - Eastern Michigan University has approved four collective bargaining agreements with its professor, UAW and two different police unions. The university negotiated the deals with EMU’s American Association of University Professors, UAW Local 197, Command Officers of Michigan and Police Officers Association of Michigan. All four deals address pay and health care coverage. There will be changes to the monthly employee health care premiums next year, but those figures were not shared by officials. The same health care availability offered to the UAW union will be made available to COAM.
