Lions grades: Detroit’s sloppy, conservative day too much to overcome in last-second loss to Bears
DETROIT -- The Detroit Lions lost at the buzzer on a last-second kick for the third time of the season, falling 16-14 at the hands of the Chicago Bears on Thanksgiving. See below for MLive’s grades from Detroit’s latest loss:Quarterbacks: Jared Goff looked solid in a couple of spots on Thanksgiving. He was 21 of 25 passing for 171 yards and two touchdowns, offering some of his better looks of the season while airing it out early. Goff averaged 5.9 intended air yards per attempt, matching his season average in this one with 3.6 air yards per completion. That felt like a slight step in the right direction for the passing attack, which had hit rock bottom since the bye.mlive.com

They started at their own 21-yard line, gaining six first downs, kicking the game-winning 28-yard field goal at the buzzer. “They really came out throwing the ball early,” Lions coach Dan Campbell said when asked about the final drive. “They were going to try and loosen up the front and try and open us up and back us up a little bit. Detroit Lions QB Jared Goff officially active for Thanksgiving game
DETROIT -- Jared Goff is back. The Detroit Lions officially activated their starting quarterback 90 minutes before kicking off on Thanksgiving against the Chicago Bears. Goff’s return is a nice boost for the Lions’ chances of snapping the NFL’s longest winless streak, which dates back nearly a year. Goff has endured a difficult first season in Detroit, but backup Tim Boyle was even worse in a spot start against the Browns on Sunday. The Lions threatened late again, but Goff missed an open Amon-Ra St. Brown on fourth-and-1 deep in Chicago territory to seal the loss.mlive.com

ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions (0-9-1) host the Chicago Bears (3-7) on Thanksgiving for the second time in three years in Week 12 action. ALLEN PARK -- Tim Boyle just turned in the worst-rated game by any Lions starting quarterback since 2009. The Lions have upgraded Jared Goff to limited on their estimated practice report on Monday afternoon. The report was estimated because Detroit didn’t actually practice, but the league requires them to file one anyway because of the Thanksgiving game in three days against the Chicago Bears. That’s the worst rating by a Lions starting quarterback since Drew Stanton’s starting debut for an injured Matthew Stafford in 2009. FILE - Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Pace walks the field before an NFL football game against the Green Bay Packers in Chicago, in this Thursday, Sept. 5, 2019, file photo. (AP Photo/Charles Rex Arbogast, File)CHICAGO – The Chicago Bears plan to keep general manager Ryan Pace and coach Matt Nagy for at least another season. Chicago won the NFC North at 12-4 in 2018 — Nagy's first season. The Bears have two playoff appearances and a 42-54 regular-season record in six years under Pace, while Nagy is 28-20. There was speculation Pace or Nagy could be on their way out when the Bears lost six in a row this season — their worst skid since 2002.
Brees, Saints pull away late for 21-9 playoff win over Bears
Brees completed 28 of 39 passes for 265 yards, connecting with Michael Thomas and Latavius Murray for touchdowns, and the New Orleans Saints defeated the Chicago Bears 21-9 in an NFC wild-card game Sunday. Brees' first touchdown pass in the opening quarter was 11-yards over the middle to Thomas, back from a three-game absence to help heal a nagging ankle injury. The 2019 Offensive Player of the Year missed nine games this season and had not caught a touchdown pass since December 2019. That marked the second time this season a Bears player was thrown out for action taken against Gardner-Johnson after the whistle. The Bears have reached the playoffs twice since Pace took over in 2015, both times under Nagy, who was hired in 2018.

New 7th seed helps Bears 8 years too late for Lovie Smith

Huh)While Matt Nagy gets to coach Chicago in the playoffs despite a middling 8-8 record that could help save his job, former Bears coach Lovie Smith can only wonder if the extra team in the postseason could have helped him eight years ago. Smith’s Bears teams from the beginning of last decade are near the top of that list. Chicago lost five of six and missed the postseason as the seventh seed with an 8-8 mark. The tough-luck missing playoff team that season was the Giants, who missed out the year before Eli Manning and Co. won their second Super Bowl under coach Tom Coughlin.
