Longtime Canadian NHL commentator Don Cherry fired by Sportsnet
The longtime voice of โCoachโs Cornerโ on โHockey Night in Canada,โ Don Cherry, has been fired after making anti-immigrant comments during a recent broadcast, according to the Toronto Sun. Cherry, 85, made comments Saturday during โHockey Night in Canada," directed at immigrants in Toronto, accusing them of โnot wearing poppiesโ for Remembrance Day. โYou people... you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey, at least you can pay a couple bucks for a poppy or something like that,โ Cherry said. MacLean issued a statement Sunday apologizing for the comments, saying:โDuring last nightโs broadcast, Don made comments that were hurtful and prejudiced and I wish I had handled myself differently. I have worked with Don for 30 years, and we both love hockey.
