Mariners add depth in deadline deals with Giants, Dodgers
The Seattle Mariners supplemented on Tuesday ahead of the trade deadline, hoping their big splash of last week and some minor moves prove to be enough to end the longest playoff drought in baseball. The Mariners acquired two injured players from the San Francisco Giants in left-hander Matthew Boyd and catcher Curt Casali and also picked up infielder Jake Lamb from the Los Angeles Dodgers. Seattle general manager Jerry Dipoto made a splash last week by acquiring Cincinnati Reds pitcher Luis Castillo to bolster the rotation before picking up a few, lesser-known names the Mariners hope will contribute down the stretch.

mlive.comThe Latest: Giants manager, some players, get vaccinated
Kapler said he experienced no side effects from his first dose of the Pfizer vaccine. He said others, who looked into vaccination possibilities in the Phoenix area at the end of spring training, had Moderna or the one-dose Johnson & Johnson shots. Opening day is Thursday at Seattle, and Kapler says any of his players who need some downtime before then will have it. School officials said COVID-19 opt-outs made it impossible to field the required number of players in key position groups to meet Southern Conference playing guidelines. The Mocs were 3-2 this spring and were set to head to Western Carolina for a game on Saturday.
What if Tigers had spent big this winter? Here’s how I built the roster with an imaginary $50 million.
In fact, I’m giving you $50 million that you can spend exclusively on free agents.”Really, that’s not so farfetched. Unlike the real Tigers, who invested about 30 percent of their budget on starting pitching, I’m going to sign only one starter, and I’m going to steal the real Tigers’ idea. Even so, I think the bullpen is perhaps the least-discussed potential weakness on the 2021 Tigers, and I’m going to try give manager A.J. I am going to have an all-Curacao middle infield by signing Jonathan Schoop ($4.5 million) and Andrelton Simmons ($10.5 million). Have fun in the Dominican Republic this winter!”The Tigers signed two outfielders in real life and I’m going to sign two outfielders as well.

Curt Casali signs with Giants, but other catcher reunions possible for Tigers
The Detroit Tigers are looking at free-agent catchers and 32-year-old Curt Casali seemed like an intriguing discount option. Casali signed a Major League deal this week with the San Francisco Giants for a reported $1.5 million. The Tigers also signed veteran Dustin Garneau to a minor-league deal. It’s possible the Tigers could stand pat with what they have. Bryan Holaday, who played for the Tigers in 2012-2015 and 2017, could be an option if the Tigers want another veteran on a minor-league deal.
mlive.comBauer blanks Royals, sports cheeky T-shirt in twinbill split
Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Trevor Bauer and catcher Curt Casali celebrate after game two of a baseball doubleheader against the Kansas City Royals Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2020, in Kansas City, Mo. Trevor Bauer pitched seven innings of one-hit ball, and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Kansas City Royals 5-0 on Wednesday night to split a doubleheader marked by strong starting pitching. In the opener of the two seven-inning games, Brad Keller didn't allow a hit until the sixth and extended his shutout streak, leading the Royals past the Reds 4-0. Bauer allowed only a single by Adalberto Mondesi in the fifth inning. After Brett Phillips lined out to right to end the game, Bauer unbuttoned his jersey to reveal a T-shirt depicting him amid a low point in his career, a meltdown during his previous visit to Kauffman Stadium last July.
Cabrera, Jones, and Romine take it deep for the 6-4 Tigers victory in Cincinnati
DETROIT After a troubling opening day Friday, the Tigers offensive switch turned on Saturday. Cron getting the first run with an RBI double allowing the Tigers to get on the board first. With a game that couldve gone either way it was the top of the 9th that showed great adjustment for JaCoby Jones. Romine being able to lead off with a single it seemed the Tigers initial game plan was to play small ball and play it safe with a bunt. Jones sends it over the left field fence for a two-run home run to give the Tigers a 6-4 lead in the top of the 9th.
