FLUSHING, MI — Flushing police are investigating a crash that left a 61-year-old man dead. Officers with the Flushing Police Department were called to the scene of a crash involving two vehicles and a bicyclist around 5:45 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8. The bicyclist, a 61-year-old Flushing man whose name has not yet been released, died from injuries sustained in the crash. A Michigan State Police accident reconstructionist was called to the scene to assist in the investigation, police said. Once the investigation is completed the case will be turned over to the Genesee County Prosecutor’s office for review.

FLUSHING, MI -- Ten students from St. Robert’s Catholic School in Flushing are moving on to face other Catholic schools around mid-Michigan in the Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship tournament. The final contest took place at St. Robert’s gym during the school day on Tuesday, Nov. 22. Each student got two practice shots before taking 10 free throws. It’s an annual tournament that helps stir excitement and encouragement among the student body, Principal Sarah Bushey said. The final round of the tournament at St. Robert’s took place before Easton Gunsell, one of the advancing students, was surprised by his older brother Braden Locker, an Air Force service member who returned home for the first time after being stationed in Saudi Arabia.

FLUSHING, MI -- Flushing’s downtown was filled with vendors, food and activities for families Saturday for its annual Harvest Fest. The festival, organized by the Flushing Chamber of Commerce, was from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 1. Performances from local groups, such as the Flushing Youth Tackle Football Program’s cheerleader groups happened throughout the day in the center of Main Street. In the last few years, the Harvest Fest has grown to include a small area in Riverview Park with food trucks and inflatable slides brought to the festival by Westside Church. “The bounce houses and food trucks draw a good crowd of people and it gives us a chance to mingle with them.”

The Flushing Harvest Fest, an event that has been a staple in the community for more than 25 years, takes place from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1 along Main Street in downtown Flushing. Organized by the Flushing Chamber of Commerce, the fall event will feature local entertainment, a pie eating contest, pie baking contest, beard and mullet contest, scarecrow decorating contest and a chili cook-off. Main Street activities include pumpkin paintings, cornhole, make your own caramel apples, popcorn, snow cones and carnival games. While personal income rose 0.5% in May, ahead of the 0.4% estimate, income after taxes and other charges, or disposable personal income, declined 0.1% on the month and 3.3% from a year ago. Goods inflation rose 9.6% while services prices were up 4.7%, both up 0.1 percentage points from April. The personal saving rate edged higher, rising to 5.4%, up 0.2 percentage points from the previous month.

FLUSHING, MI -- Flushing’s annual SummerFest, a festival that will fill Riverview Park with carnival rides, food and live music, begins this week. Hosted by the Flushing Chamber of Commerce, festivities are kicked off at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 8 with a parade through downtown on Coutant Street, south on McKinley Road and west on Main Street. There will be an obstacle course, face painting, live DJs, arts and crafts, princesses, book giveaways and more near the bandshell. We’ve really added quite a bit to the stage performance-wise,” Lesly Foreman, Flushing Chamber of Chamber service coordinator, told MLive-The Flint Journal. A man booted out of a Chinese restaurant in Flushing, Queens, for not wearing pants retaliated by smashing glass windows and doors at the establishment on Saturday. The incident at 4 Choices & A Soup on Roosevelt Avenue reportedly began at around 4:40 p.m. when the man showed up with a hammer after entering the restaurant with no pants earlier in the day and returning several times after. Restaurant staff described the man as a regular customer who had mental health issues.

Coach Bob Foreback couldn’t be with his players because he tested positive for COVID-19 so he sat alone on the hill behind center field to watch his team raise its record to 29-0. Goodrich made it 3-0 in the fourth inning, when Jordon Conn doubled to the fence in left-center field, scoring Joey Belanger. “Goodrich played a solid game with great pitching and defense,” said Flushing coach Stephen Burdis. Flushing, which was seeking the first girls soccer league championship in school history, saw its overall record fall to 12-5-1.

GENESEE COUNTY, MI -- A Chicago-based solar energy company that wants to bring a 200-megawatt solar farm to Flushing and Montrose townships has a buyer for most of the energy it wants to produce here. Consumers Energy said in a news release on Wednesday, May 18, that it has reached an agreement to purchase 300 megawatts of energy from the solar farm proposed in northern Genesee County by Ranger Power and from another planned Ranger project in Hillsdale County. The Consumers’ announcement says both the Genesee and Hillsdale projects are expected to be operational by the end of 2024. It recently finished work on a 239-megawatt solar farm on more than 1,900 acres in Shiawassee County. The Chargers will play as an independent in football and teams on the 2022 schedule include 2021 playoff teams Detroit Country Day, Saginaw Heritage, Pontiac Notre Dame Prep and Frankenmuth. Two Saginaw Valley League opponents, Saginaw United and Saginaw Heritage, will remain on Powers’ schedule again this season. Powers athletic director Watson said it wasn’t difficult finding teams to play in the first two weeks and final three weeks of the season. The challenge was lining up opponents in weeks 4-7 since that’s when teams usually play league games.

FLINT TWP., MI – Flint Township police are investigating a two-vehicle crash from Sunday morning that left a 76-year-old Flushing man dead. Officers with the Flint Township Police Department were called out around 11 a.m. Sunday, April 17, to the area of North Dye Road and Maplekrest Drive for a traffic crash. A preliminary investigation has revealed that a black Hyundai Sonata was headed south on North Dye Road when it hit a southbound black GMC Yukon head on. Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the fatal crash, police said. Flint Township police were assisted at the scene by the Michigan State Police.

Suspect in attack on Asian American woman in NYC is arrested
Police said Brandon Elliot, 38, is the man seen on surveillance video kicking and stomping the woman near Times Square on Monday. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio called the attack “absolutely disgusting and outrageous” and said it was “absolutely unacceptable” that witnesses didn’t help the woman. Two lobby workers, described by their union as doormen, were seen on video witnessing the attack but failing to help Kari. This year in New York City, there have been 33 hate crimes with an Asian victim as of Sunday, police said. Joo Han, the deputy director of the Asian American Federation, called the plainclothes patrols a “knee-jerk response” that ignored misgivings she said many people in Asian communities have about law enforcement.

FLUSHING, N.Y. - Long before Serena Williams became America's great tennis star, and even before Arthur Ashe made history, there was Althea Gibson. Tennis' Open Era had yet to begin -- meaning women weren't being paid for playing tennis -- and almost all the country was segregated. The U.S. Open unveiled a sculpture of Gibson on Monday, the first day of the 2019 tournament. Including her doubles titles, Gibson won 11 grand slams, more than Arthur Ashe, who has a whole stadium named after him.
FBI hunts ISIS doctor from mid-Michigan
FLUSHING, Mich. – The FBI is investigating a young man from the Flint area for supporting ISIS and working as a doctor for the terror group. Mohamed Maleeh Masha, 24, of Flushing, is at the center of a terror investigation as an alleged ISIS sympathizer. The Detroit News found a sealed FBI search warrant posted online showing that agents were tracking Masha from his family’s home in Flushing to Syrai. “It’s a rare instance when you learn of an on-going terror investigation before anyone is ever charged,” Detroit News reporter Robert Snell said. “They may find that his family is financing his ISIS sympathizing.”The small town is reeling as the reach of ISIS into the U.S. reaches the heart of Michigan.
