KALAMAZOO, MI -- The Kalamazoo Board of Education is looking to regroup and figure out how to work more collaboratively before starting the process to search for its next superintendent. After a tumultuous month in Kalamazoo Public Schools – marked by Superintendent Rita Raichoudhuri’s abrupt resignation on Dec. 12 and the firing of Assistant Superintendent of Operations Jim English on Dec. 28 – the seven-member school board is attempting to rebound and get back on track. The focus of the meetings will be teaching board members about the governance role that they serve in, Harrison said. A lot of board development was done prior to the previous superintendent and they are returning to that practice, Harrison said. Magic Johnson campaigning for Biden-Harris in Detroit, Lansing this weekend

DETROIT – Former NBA all star and Michigan native Magic Johnson will campaign for Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and running mate Kamala Harris on Saturday in Lansing and Detroit. The Biden-Harris campaign said Johnson will participate in a “Shop Talk” roundtable conversation about voting with Black men in Detroit. In Lansing, Johnson’s hometown, he will participate in a voter mobilization event to urge Michiganders to vote early at their local clerk’s office or satellite voting location, the campaign said. Kamala Harris suspends travel after staffer tests COVID-19 positive

Joe Biden’s presidential campaign said Thursday that vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris will suspend in-person events until Monday after two people associated with the campaign tested positive for coronavirus. The campaign said Biden had no exposure, though he and Harris spent several hours campaigning together in Arizona on Oct. 8. Harris was scheduled to travel Thursday to North Carolina for events encouraging voters to cast early ballots. The campaign told reporters Thursday morning that Harris' communications director and a traveling staff member for her travel to Arizona tested positive after that Oct. 8 trip. Harris and Biden spent several hours together that day through multiple campaign stops, private meetings and a joint appearance in front of reporters at an airport.

Police seek missing 45-year-old Detroit woman

DETROIT Police are searching for Detroit resident Sonya Harris who disappeared shortly after 8 a.m. Friday, Aug. 3. Harris, 45, was last seen at her home in the 2500 block of Montclair in Detroit. She is described as having a light brown complexion, short black Afro hair, weighs 200 pounds and is 5 feet, 6 inches tall. WASHINGTON President Donald Trump on Thursday gave credence to a false and racist conspiracy about Kamala Harris eligibility to be president, fueling an online misinformation campaign that parallels the one he used to power his rise into politics. Trump comments about Harris on Thursday landed in a blizzard of other untrue, racist or sexist claims unleashed across social media and conservative websites after Biden picked Harris, the first Black woman and the first Asian American woman on a major party ticket. The misinformation campaign is built on falsehoods that have circulating less noticeably for months, propelled by Trump and his supporters.

Detroit police seek missing 61-year-old woman last seen Saturday

DETROIT – Police are looking for Patricia Harris, a 61-year-old woman last seen Saturday afternoon. According to authorities, Harris was last seen at about 1 p.m. when she left her residence in the 17000 block of Sunderland Road. Harris is 4 feet, 9 inches tall and weighs about 150 pounds. She was last seen wearing a blue scarf on her head, black and white jogging suit, and boots. 21-year-old killed at Ypsilanti park, search for killer continues

YPSILANTI TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A 21-year-old man was fatally shot multiple times at Nancy Park in the area of Harris and Grove Street around 8:30 p.m. Saturday, police say. Medics tried saving the man when they arrived, but it was too late. As of now no arrests have been made.

Father of 3 killed in shooting on Detroits west side

DETROIT The 29-year-old father of three young children was killed early Saturday morning on Detroits west side, near the intersection of Plymouth and Greenfield roads. Family and friends gathered at the spot where Bryan White was killed to pray and embrace each other. He was an amazing father, Harris said. His friends described him as an outgoing and kind man killed in a senseless shooting. Even if you didnt know him, if you heard his laugh you would laugh, Harris said.

The attendance team will call parents and make home visits to uncover what's keeping a child from school.
