DETROIT – A man said he tried to help a Highland woman, who is accused of dumping her baby in a trash can. The man, who was not being identified, said he found the woman, 23-year-old Jennifer Woodard, in a crisis, walking near Brightmoor. “She was deciding to give it up for adoption,” the man claimed. The man claimed someone was with her at that time. Prosecutor’s Office accused Woodard of putting her baby in a trash can.
Mother of newborn baby dropped off at Detroit hospital charged with assault, abandonment
DETROIT – A Highland, Michigan woman has been charged with assault and abandonment of her newborn infant after the child was mysteriously dropped off at Sinai-Grace Hospital in Detroit last week. Police identified the parents of the newborn child on Sunday. The newborn baby was reportedly cold to the touch and lost a large amount of blood due to the umbilical cord not being clamped off, officials said. The baby reportedly required a blood transfusion at the hospital. The man who dropped off the baby was reportedly questioned by police and released pending further investigation.

Three teens earn Haun memorial scholarships
The scholarships are in memory of siblings Alyssa and Justin Haun, who were killed in a crash last year in Bedford Township. Steven Kraine of Bedford High School, Rylee Holek of Monroe County Middle College and Cecilia Mainzer of Highland High School in Medina, Ohio, were the first recipients of the Alyssa and Justin Haun Memorial Scholarship. Alyssa Marie Haun, 16, who was visiting from her home in Ohio, and Justin Trevor Haun, 13, of Bedford Township, were killed July 4, 2018, on Sterns Rd. The scholarships will be awarded annually to students attending Highland, where Alyssa attended, and both BHS because Justin attended Bedford Junior High School, and the middle college, where Justin planned to attend high school.
