Representatives of the annual IndyCar race on Belle Isle laid out a plan before Detroit City Council on Tuesday to bring the race back to the streets of downtown Detroit where the race was held from 1982 to 1991. The race is scheduled to return to Belle Isle June 3-5, 2022 and a current agreement with the state to host the race on Belle Isle is good though 2024. Bud Denker, president of Penske Corporation, wants to see a downtown street circuit beginning in 2023. The 2021 version of the Detroit Grand Prix was won by Marcus Ericsson and Patricio O’Ward.

Kyle Larson was fired by Ganassi this week for using a racial slur during a virtual race. Virtual racing has become the only way for drivers to promote their partners during stay-at-home orders, and teams have recognized the value of having their drivers participate. Until racing resumes, the virtual competition is all there is for drivers and fans.

Roger Penske has canceled the doubleheader race at Detroit and adjusted the IndyCar schedule Monday as the series remains on hold during the COVID-19 pandemic. IndyCar is now tentatively scheduled to start its season June 6 at Texas Motor Speedway. To ensure a 15-race schedule, IndyCar will now run doubleheaders at Iowa Speedway, Laguna Speedway in California, and return for a second race on the road course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in October. The Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey will now feature a race Sept. 19, as well as the previously scheduled race Sept. 20. Penske scheduled the Harvest GP is in addition to a July 4 scheduled road course race at the speedway and the Indy 500.
