Letter from the Editor: Michigan gives us the perfect escape. We just need to head outdoors.

Luckily, Michigan offers plenty of refuge for grieving souls – forests and thickets; rivers and lakes; beaches and trails. The boats that usually motored us to the island weren’t running. Since the boats weren’t running, we basically had the island to ourselves when we landed. The remote island was even more empty due to the pandemic. But getting lost in the thickets in Michigan allowed us to put them into perspective.

Isle Royale campgrounds, trails begin to reopen as wildfire containment reaches 45%

ISLE ROYALE, MI – Campgrounds and trails are beginning to reopen on Michigan’s remote Isle Royale more than three weeks after the Horne Fire was ignited by a lightning strike, the National Park Service announced. As of Friday, Sept. 3, the following areas are reopened: Lane Cove Trail and Campground; Mount Franklin Trail between the Greenstone Ridge Trail and Tobin Harbor Trail; Duncan Bay Campground and Dock; and Stoll Memorial Trail and Scoville Point. The fire had grown to 429 acres and was 45% contained as of Thursday, Sept. 2, according to the NPS. Closed areas are marked with signs where possible and monitored to ensure compliance. The Horne Fire was ignited by a lightning strike on Aug. 10 near the Duncan Bay/Tobin Harbor Portage Trail at Isle Royale National Park.

Wildfire on Michigan’s Isle Royale continues to burn after 20 days

ISLE ROYALE, MI – The Horne Fire on Michigan’s remote Isle Royale continues to rage 20 days after it was ignited by a lightning strike. The fire is about 20% contained as of Monday morning, Aug. 30, according to the National Park Service. It ignited on Aug. 10 near the Duncan Bay/Tobin Harbor Portage Trail at Isle Royale National Park. Some U.P. Residents told to shut doors, windows as wildfire smoke blankets area

GOGEBIC COUNTY, MI – Smoke from wildfires in Minnesota and Isle Royale has made its way to Michigan. Officials in parts of the Upper Peninsula are advising residents to close windows and doors on their homes as the haze from several ongoing fires enters the region. Officials in Gogebic County, the westernmost county in the Upper Peninsula, have been notified by multiple community members of a haze entering the area. RELATED: Lightning strike caused ongoing wildfire at Michigan’s Isle Royale, NPS says“The air quality has diminished as well as visibility,” police said. The National Park Service said a separate fire on Michigan’s Isle Royale has burned nearly 200 acres.

Photos show nearly half of Lake Superior covered in ice after latest cold stretch

Nearly half of the largest and deepest of the Great Lakes is now ice-covered after this latest stint of deep-freeze temperatures. “Satellites got a great view of ice on western Lake Superior today. The largest and deepest Great Lake is approaching 50% ice covered!” said staff at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Researchers at Isle Royale, Michigan’s most remote island in Lake Superior, confirmed an ice bridge formed between the island and the Minnesota/Canadian mainland on Feb. 15. An up close look at a satellite image of Lake Superior on Feb. 16, 2021 shows nearly half the lake is ice covered.

Freighter aground on Detroit River now freed

DETROIT – A freighter that ran aground on the Detroit River has been freed Thursday. The U.S. Coast Guard tweeted that the the Harvest Spirit has been refloated and will undergo further inspection. The 500-foot freighter Harvest Spirit, aground in the Detroit River since Wednesday morning, was successfully refloated this afternoon and is safely anchored in U.S. waters while awaiting a thorough inspection. Freighter runs aground in Detroit River

DETROIT – A freighter ran aground in the Detroit River’s Livingstone Channel at about 7 a.m. Wednesday. Boat traffic is being redirected as crews are working to free the Harvest Spirit, a Canadian vessel built in 2012. The ship was headed toward Thunder Bay in Ontario, just north of Isle Royale in Lake Superior, when it went aground between Grosse Ile and Bois Blanc Island.
