Wolverine recruiting report: Why DL Brooks Bahr committed to Michigan

After touring campus and taking in a Michigan practice, Bahr felt ready to pull the trigger on his college decision, committing to the Wolverines just days after his visit. “They just had everything I wanted in a school,” Bahr told MLive in a phone interview. They had everything I want to study -- I want to study marketing and sports management, and Ross is a great business school. The School of Kinesiology is a great school, and just seeing how the coaching staff operates, I loved how they coached. Bahr, who chose Michigan over 15 other offers, said he admires Elston’s candid approach on the recruiting trail.

Where’s the pass rush going to come from? Michigan looks inside for help

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The biggest question facing Michigan football this offseason no longer has to do with the quarterback position. Where’s the pass rush going to come from? “Yes, we would like to generate more production from the inside,” Mike Elston, Michigan’s first-year defensive line coach, told reporters on Tuesday. A competent defensive line and advantageous pass rush can make a lot of average players on the back end look good. While guys like Morris and Upshaw are the obvious targets, it’s going to have to come from guys up and down the line.

Sherrone Moore, Jesse Minter are Michigan football’s highest-paid assistants

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Jim Harbaugh’s assistant coaches at Michigan all received new contracts with pay raises in recent months, making Sherrone Moore and first-year defensive coordinator Jesse Minter the highest-paid on staff. Weiss, meanwhile, signed a new three-year contract on Feb. 24 that boosted his pay from $600,000 to $850,000 per year, with identical performance bonuses. The duo have a tall task ahead of them following the abrupt departure of Michigan offensive coordinator Josh Gattis, whose pay topped $1 million annually. • Running backs coach Mike Hart signed a new two-year contract on Feb. 22 that will pay him $550,000, up from the $430,000 in 2021. Michigan is coming off a successful 2021 season in which it finished 12-2, won the Big Ten championship and earned a College Football Playoff berth.

Michigan football has new DC, but expect similar-looking defense in 2022

Expect more of the same in 2022, Minter says, but with his own wrinkles. The Wolverines finished eighth in the country in scoring defense (17.4 points per game) and 20th in total defense (330.9), re-establishing themselves as one of the nation’s best. Last year, the playmakers were the edge guys — that was pretty clear — and I think the defense was built around that. Also clear on their mind is finding production in the pass-rushing department, a real strength of the defense last year. “We’ll always look to find a better way to do things,” Minter said.

Jim Harbaugh praises new Michigan DC Jesse Minter as ‘seamless fit’

Jim Harbaugh didn’t have to go far to find his new defensive coordinator. Jesse Minter, a 38-year-old former coach for the Baltimore Ravens, has formally been introduced as Michigan’s next d-coordinator, Jim Harbaugh announced Wednesday evening. At the time, Michigan had named Ravens assistant Mike Macdonald its defensive coordinator, but Minter “came highly recommended by my brother John,” Jim Harbaugh said. “It is an honor to be joining coach Harbaugh’s staff at Michigan,” Minter said in a statement. Michigan football reportedly hiring Vanderbilt DC Jesse Minter as new defensive coordinator

Michigan football is hiring Vanderbilt defensive coordinator Jesse Minter to replace Mike Macdonald in the same position, according to multiple reports.

Report: Michigan to hire Vanderbilt’s Jesse Minter, ex-Ravens assistant, as next DC

Jim Harbaugh has found a new head voice on defense, and he’s another former Baltimore Ravens assistant. Michigan is planning to hire Vanderbilt defensive coordinator and long-time Ravens assistant Jesse Minter as the school’s next defensive coordinator, according to multiple Tuesday afternoon reports. But there’s high expectations for Minter, a Little Rock, Ark., native and the son of former Cincinnati head coach Rick Minter. Macdonald returned to the Ravens last week after one year as defensive coordinator at Michigan, where he overhauled that side and turned it into a top-20 unit nationally. Now it will be up to Minter, the Wolverines’ third defensive coordinator in as many years, to do the same.
