KALAMAZOO TOWNSHIP, MI -- A fire in a Kalamazoo Central High School bathroom was quickly extinguished Thursday, Jan. 26 and there were no injuries, police said. Kalamazoo Township police and firefighters responded about 1 p.m. Thursday to the school, 2432 N. Drake Road, on a report of a fire. The school’s police resource officer was able to quickly extinguish the fire. The fire is under investigation by the state police fire marshal’s office. Kalamazoo Township police did not identify what burned in the bathroom.

KALAMAZOO, MI -- Kalamazoo Public Schools board members remembered Naya Reynolds, a 22-year-old Kalamazoo Central High School graduate, and spoke out against gun violence during the school board’s meeting Thursday, Sept. 8. A student at Western Michigan University, studying criminal justice and sociology, Reynolds was a cheerleader while attending Kalamazoo Central High School. Gun violence in the Kalamazoo community hit closer to home for Harrison than it has in years prior. Jackson called the coach an “anchor” in the local school community and recalled seeing Reynolds prior to her passing. Kalamazoo Public Schools Superintendent Rita Raichoudhuri said crisis counseling has become a priority for the district, and 30 individuals trained in crisis counseling have been hired in the past year.

KALAMAZOO, MI -- Last week, students in Kalamazoo helped their teacher propose to his high school sweetheart. Kalamazoo Central High School chemistry teacher Jovaughn Carver proposed to his girlfriend, fellow teacher Sarah Townsend, with a little help from students in both their classes, Superintendent Rita Raichoudhuri said during a school board meeting last week. Carver’s chemistry students helped by creating signs with the lyrics from the couple’s favorite song, “Love Story” by Taylor Swift. “When (Townsend) walked into the art class, she saw Jovaughn,” Raichoudhuri said. “I’m happy to report she said yes.”The teachers first met as students at Kalamazoo’s Loy Norrix High School, the superintendent said, and are both now teachers within the district.

KALAMAZOO, MI – Athletic teams at Kalamazoo Central and Kalamazoo Loy Norrix high schools will compete without spectators at home games until February in an attempt to slow the spread of COVID-19. Loy Norrix announced the decision Tuesday on its athletics Facebook page, and a source within the Kalamazoo Public School District confirmed that Kalamazoo Central will take the same precautions for the rest of January. RELATED: Kalamazoo Public Schools limits events to 100 people as omicron COVID variant surgesKalamazoo Public Schools released a statement Wednesday stating that having spectators in addition to personnel required to attend each event would risk exceeding the 100-person capacity limit established by the district. “Due to these capacity limitations, Kalamazoo Central High School and Loy Norrix High School will not be allowing spectators at most of their home athletic events. Having any spectators could exceed the capacity limits due to the number of student-athletes, coaches, officials and other school personnel required to attend each event.

KALAMAZOO, MI — No one was injured after fights led to a lockdown at Kalamazoo Central High School. The high school went into a lockdown the afternoon of Wednesday Oct. 20 after a fight, Kalamazoo Public Schools spokesperson Susan Coney said in a news release. The Kalamazoo Township Police Department responded to the high school, 2432 N. Drake Road, Wednesday after multiple fights happened, Coney said. The school was put into lockdown for safety reasons and was later lifted. Students at the school were dismissed at the normal time, Coney said.

KALAMAZOO, MI – The two-day closure of Kalamazoo Central High School was disappointing, the district said. The Kalamazoo Public Schools high school, 2432 N. Drake Road, lost power Tuesday, Sept. 7, as severe thunderstorms hit Kalamazoo and moved across Michigan. “The power outage at Kalamazoo Central High School and subsequent two-day closing, that was caused by a recent storm, was disappointing,” KPS Executive Director for Communications Susan Coney said. The building was closed on both Sept. 8 and 9, because of the power outage. There are a few small outages effecting less than 200 people in Kalamazoo County, per Consumers Energy outage map.

KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI – Kalamazoo Central High School and Spring Valley Elementary School are closed Wednesday, Sept. 8, because of power outages. The Kalamazoo area was among places particularly hard hit by Tuesday’s thunderstorms that left 95,000 still without power in Michigan. Consumers Energy reported that 9,679 customers in Kalamazoo County are without power Wednesday, second only to Saginaw County, with 10,895 outages. A Muskegon-area school, Orchard View Schools’ Cardinal Elementary, is also closed after sustaining storm damage. The National Weather Service in Grand Rapids noted that a corridor from Bangor to Kalamazoo to Bangor was among area that saw significant storm damage.

KALAMAZOO, MI — The Kalamazoo City Commission approved a School Resource Officer partnership with Kalamazoo Public Schools for the 2020-2021 school year. In the district, Loy Norrix High School and Kalamazoo Central High School are part of the School Resource Officer program that places a police officer inside of the school, Raichoudhuri said. The Kalamazoo Township Police Department, Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety and Kalamazoo Public Schools team were a the table and had “student centered conversations” to create the Memorandum Of Agreement, she said. A presentation about School Resource Officers in Kalamazoo was included in the July 6 Kalamazoo City Commission agenda. The Kalamazoo City Commission first discussed the School Resource Officer issue at a previous meeting in June, and asked for more information before voting on the issue July 6.

GREENWOOD LAKE, NY -- New York Yankees great Derek Jeter, a 1992 Kalamazoo Central High School graduate, has lowered the asking price on his family “castle” in New York. The castle-like resort home on Greenwood Lake in New York is now listed for sale at $12.75 million, according to a press release from Top Ten Real Estate Deals. The home of the MLB Hall of Famer was reduced in price by $2 million from the original asking price of $14.75 million in 2018, the release said. The estate actually features two castles — the master castle with a connected tower, and guest castle. The home’s listing agent is Diane Mitchell with Wright Real Estate in Nyack, New York.

KALAMAZOO, MI — Family Health Center plans to administer more than 400 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to community members during a drive-through clinic held at Kalamazoo Central High School on Wednesday, March 17, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Family Health Center is currently vaccinating eligible adults, 65 years and older. KALAMAZOO, MI -- A handful of Kalamazoo students protested Thursday the lack of in-person learning in the district. The protest was started by a Kalamazoo Central High School senior who earlier this year started a petition urging district leaders to reopen school buildings. Virtual school “has only gotten worse,” Zamora said. Zamora said those protesting virtual school don’t want to force everyone to return to school but would like in-person to be an option. The 15-year-old freshmen said it was “boring” and “nothing special” to start high school in virtual school.

KALAMAZOO, MI -- A senior at Kalamazoo Public Schools is urging his district to offer in-person learning. In a statement to MLive, the district acknowledged that some students were disappointed in the decision to remain virtual. Results from the teaching staff survey found 83% of respondents wanted to remain virtual and 17% wanted hybrid. Raichoudhuri said the majority of research favored returning to in-person learning. The declining case numbers of COVID-19 in Kalamazoo County also pointed toward the return to in-person learning, she said.
