Pro Football Focus ranks Detroit Lions wide receivers as second-worst unit in 2021
Pro Football Focus ranked the new-look receiver room 31st, with only the Houston Texans coming in with lower expectations. For what it’s worth last year’s wide receiver corps were ranked sixth on PFF’s preseason rankings. Williams averaged 15.5 yards per reception in 2019, running more crossing routes than nearly any other NFL receiver from 2016-2019. He’s a long, explosive receiver the Lions are hoping can unlock quarterback Jared Goff’s deep ball. “Yeah, a little bit,” Williams said when asked if he feels like the receiver room is being overlooked.mlive.com
Early Detroit Lions depth chart: Strengths, weaknesses, holes to fill after first wave of free agency

Detroit Lions free agency recap: A look at all the comings and goings heading into the signing period
ALLEN PARK -- We had a story ready to go about how the Detroit Lions had done very little heading into signing day. And so to me, another way to look at it as I don’t need the highest-priced free agents. CB Mike Ford: Signed a one-year deal worth $1.2 million. CutDT Danny Shelton: He was supposed to be one of the cornerstones of last year’s free-agent class, signing a two-year, $8 million deal to help fortify Detroit’s run defense. CB Desmond Trufant: Landed a two-year, $20 million in free agency last year.mlive.com
Marvin Jones reportedly agrees with Jaguars on 2-year deal worth up to $14.5 million
ALLEN PARK -- Another vital piece of the Bob Quinn era is on the way out, with Marvin Jones reportedly signing a two-year deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars. ESPN reports Jones will make up to $14.5 million, including $9.2 guaranteed. Jones landed in Detroit on a five-year, $40 million deal with the opportunity to hit the next level out of A.J. He reportedly agreed to a three-year deal worth as much as $21 million. The Lions have cleared about $26 million in space in recent days but remain on the books for nearly $44 million in dead money.mlive.com

If more signings would have went like the first, Quinn would still have an office in Allen Park. But Flowers has just nine sacks in two seasons and Detroit has continued to trot out one of the worst pass rushes in the league. Marvin Jones thrived in Detroit. Now he wants to win.
ALLEN PARK -- Marvin Jones came to Detroit to step outside of A.J. “Nothing’s off the table, but at this point in my career, that’s what I want,” Jones said. Definitely am looking for somewhere to go where I can go in and contribute and be a leader and win some games. That makes some sense, given Jones’ relationship with Stafford off the field -- their families are very close -- as well as their productivity on it. And obviously being paired with Sean McVay, I think that’s going to be a great fit for him, and I can’t wait to see how he progresses through that.”mlive.com
2021 NFL Draft: 5 wide receivers who could make sense for the Detroit Lions
All of this put together means it’s time to look ahead to this year’s wide receiver draft class. The receiver was limited to five games this past season, catching 20 balls for 338 yards and two touchdowns. Jones took over in Golladay’s absence in 2020, with 76 catches for 978 yards and nine scores while playing 16 games. The Lions are expected to have a new starting quarterback in 2021, and as things stand, a freshly-stocked room of pass-catchers could be on the way too. Still, he’s the reigning Heisman winner and at the top of a loaded receiver draft class.mlive.com

Inside the locker room: Lions players express disbelief in late controversial calls in loss to Vikings
DETROIT -- Neither Adrian Peterson nor Marvin Jones held back when asked about two controversial calls to occur late in Detroit’s season-ending loss to Minnesota. Those two controversial calls involved an overturned touchdown catch and questionable roughing the passer penalty after a fourth-down sack. A crushing blow to a defense that hadn’t stopped too much of anything in goal-to-go situations all season, no doubt. I’m standing there watching the entire play, and he actually finished with his hands down and running. (Photo by Gregory Shamus/Getty Images)DETROIT – Kirk Cousins danced in the end zone after running for a go-ahead touchdown early in the fourth quarter and the Minnesota Vikings went on to celebrate the end of a disappointing season with a 37-35 win over the lowly Detroit Lions on Sunday. The Vikings (7-9) failed for the fourth time in a decade to make two straight trips to the playoffs. The Lions (5-11) lost their last four games eight of 10 after going into November with a .500 record under former coach Matt Patricia. In a matchup without postseason implications, the Vikings and Lions combined to play a closely contested game with a lot of highlights and lowlights. Alexander Mattison ran for 16 yards to convert a fourth-and-1 from the Lions 25 with 2:28 left, allowing the Vikings to run out the clock to seal the win.

Matthew Stafford, Jamie Collins, Frank Ragnow questionable against Vikings; Kenny Golladay out
Stafford suffered a sprained ankle early in last week’s loss while already dealing with injuries to his rib cartilage and throwing hand’s thumb. Lions interim coach Darrell Bevell said Stafford hasn’t suffered any setbacks and will continue to be evaluated through the weekend. The offensive line will be without right tackle Tyrell Crosby (ankle) and guard/center Joe Dahl (back) in Week 17. Star receiver Kenny Golladay has also already been ruled out, officially ending his disappointing campaign. Marvin Jones loves Detroit, but sounds like he’s ready to test free agency too
ALLEN PARK -- Marvin Jones was the first big free-agent signing of the Bob Quinn era. “The free-agent process is always very exciting, and it’s something that I’m excited about,” Jones said after practice on Wednesday. It was a good match for both player and team, and Jones agreed to a five-year deal worth $40 million. Jones has 34 touchdowns in Detroit, which is just one shy of tying Johnnie Morton for third most in franchise history. Detroit also has bigger issues on its hands at receiver, where Kenny Golladay’s contract also is set to expire.mlive.com

Lions Better At Firing Than Winning
The Detroit Lions have more fired employees than victories the past two months. Detroit dismissed special teams coordinator Brayden Coombs on Monday, three-plus weeks after parting ways with general manager Bob Quinn and coach Matt Patricia. The Lions announced their latest move a day after falling to 1-2 under interim coach Darrell Bevell, 2-6 since the start of November, and 5-9 overall this season. The 30-year-old receiver has 65 catches, equaling his career-high with Cincinnati five years ago, 779 yards receiving, and seven touchdowns. Detroit’s defense failed Stafford more than three times, for what it’s worth. Detroit’s defense ended up forcing its lone punt of the day following the fumble, so complete disaster avoided outside of those lost 4 minutes or so. Henry averaged 6.1 yards per carry, and he did most of his work slicing through Detroit’s first line of defense. Report: Detroit Lions to waive speedy wide receiver Marvin Hall
ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions plan to waive wide receiver Marvin Hall, according to a report from Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network. He’s seen increased playing time due to injuries to Lions receivers Kenny Golladay and Danny Amendola. Marvin Jones has played a near every-down role most of the season, but he’s been quiet outside of a couple of outings. Lions wide receiver Quintez Cephus has seen at least two targets and 15 snaps in the previous four games, so an increased role could be on the way for the fifth-round rookie. D’Andre Swift’s midweek injury further clouds Lions-Panthers in Week 11 fantasy football action
ALLEN PARK -- Things are looking bleak from a fantasy football perspective ahead of this weekend’s matchup between the Detroit Lions and Carolina Panthers. Both starting quarterbacks are working through injuries, not to mention breakout rookie running back D’Andre Swift is in concussion protocol after a midweek brain injury. Star Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey is also not expected to play in Week 11. ESPN had Swift ranked as the 14th best running back play for Week 11 in standard PPR leagues. Matthew Stafford, Marvin Jones, Danny Amendola not practicing for Lions; Kenny Golladay back
ALLEN PARK -- Kenny Golladay finally made his return to Lions practice, just in time to lose Marvin Jones, Danny Amendola and, yes, even Matthew Stafford. But clearly there is also concern about the thumb because Stafford rarely takes days off, even when injured. Jones and Amendola didn’t attend practice at all, leaving the Lions' offense shorthanded as preparations began for the Panthers. Amendola left the Washington game with a hip injury, the same injury that has sidelined Golladay the last two weeks. A win is a win; let Las Vegas worry about the margin of victory. It appeared there were actually 10 seconds left when down judge Dana McKenzie blew his whistle and raised his left hand. There actually should have been only 4 seconds left, which probably would have forced a Hail Mary by Stafford. But with 6 seconds left, Stafford had time for a quick pass, and he hit Marvin Jones for 9 yards.
Matthew Stafford had just 16 seconds to beat the NFL’s No. 1 passing defense. He did it.

Matthew Stafford, Detroit Lions offense struggle in back-to-back losses
DETROIT – The Detroit Lions are now 3-5, and one of the many questions facing the team is the performance of the offense and play of quarterback Matthew Stafford. Stafford started the game well, but faded in the second half, throwing two interceptions as the Lions tried to come back against the Minnesota Vikings. Stafford -- and the Lions' offense as a whole -- has been inconsistent all year. After the game, Stafford called the interception a bad decision, saying, “I didn’t see (the linebacker), otherwise I wouldn’t have thrown it. Earlier in the game, Stafford had a streak of 16 straight completions.
Why didn’t Detroit Lions do more at the trade deadline?
DETROIT – It was a quiet trade deadline for the Detroit Lions as they opted to mostly stay put with what they had. Sitting at 3-4 and currently not holding a playoff spot, why didn’t Detroit do more at the deadline? One trade was enoughThe Lions picked up defensive end Everson Griffen last week for a conditional sixth round pick. Giving up another draft pick would’ve been too expensive for the Lions. They’re different players, but when the Lions traded Golden Tate at the deadline in 2018, they got a third-round pick in return.
Detroit Lions sit tight at trade deadline
ALLEN PARK -- After getting some shopping done last week, the Detroit Lions elected to stand pat at Tuesday’s trade deadline. That includes Detroit, which acquired Cowboys pass rusher Everson Griffen for a conditional sixth-round pick. Then just days after the trade, the Lions lost star defensive end Trey Flowers to an arm injury. So the trade for Griffen has turned out to be especially timely, and the Lions are excited to get him on the practice field for the first time on Wednesday. Quick observations: Lions run home losing streak to 7 games with ugly setback against Colts
That’s seven straight losses at Ford Field, their worst losing streak in this building since those very dark years of 2008-09. Matthew Stafford hit Marvin Jones with a 25-yard touchdown pass that staked Detroit to an early 7-0 lead, but the offense went stale after that. Stafford did heat up in the third quarter, and even pulled the Lions to within 20-14 on a 9-yard touchdown pass to Kerryon Johnson. Detroit Lions need to let Matthew Stafford loose
DETROIT – The Detroit Lions are 3-3 after back-to-back wins following their bye week. If the Lions do want to make a run to the playoffs, they need to let Matthew Stafford loose. Here are reasons the Lions need to let Matthew Stafford carry the offense if they want to make a playoff run. The Lions need Stafford to continue hitting on those deep throws, as their offense has been inconsistent this season. If the Lions are inconsistent in how they want to run, or can’t get much of a run game going, that’s even more reason to let Stafford carry the offense.

Lions rule out Miles Killebrew against Falcons due to personal issue

Killebrew has not played a defensive snap this season, but remains a critical piece on those much-improved special teams units. He’s played 113 snaps there this season, which matches Jalen Reeves-Maybin for a team high, and has made five tackles. Detroit will also be without cornerback Desmond Trufant in Atlanta, but every other player on the 53-man roster has been given the green light. That includes defensive end Trey Flowers (wrist), receiver Marvin Jones (knee) and center Frank Ragnow (groin), each of whom missed practice time this week because of injuries.mlive.com
Lions rule out CB Desmond Trufant once again, Jeff Okudah headed for another start
The Lions have given top defensive end Trey Flowers the green light to play on Sunday despite a wrist injury that he’s battled all week. Trufant was Atlanta’s first-round pick in 2013 and turned in seven good seasons there, including making the Pro Bowl in 2015. But that signing hasn’t worked out so far, with Trufant sidelined most of the season with hamstring injuries. That has forced the Lions to turn to Jeff Okudah, a promising rookie whose development was slowed by a lack of practice time. Trufant’s injury issues forced Okudah to start the following week in Green Bay, and the inexperience showed.mlive.com
Trey Flowers, Marvin Jones among 4 starters to miss Lions practice; Danny Amendola limited
But Flowers has emerged from that game banged up, missing practice on Wednesday with a wrist injury. Receiver Marvin Jones (knee), center Frank Ragnow (groin) and cornerback Desmond Trufant (hamstring) also did not participate, leaving Detroit short four starters heading into Sunday’s game with the Atlanta Falcons. “Trey is someone that shows up every single week and does stuff that you’re just like -- it’s almost clinic-like teaching,” coach Matt Patricia said this week. I think it’s a great example for everybody that’s around him of how you need to approach every single week. I think that’s just how he is.mlive.com
Ask Kyle: What’s the hold up on the Kenny Golladay contract situation?
That contract situation is starting to become a thing, thanks in part to some cryptic social media posts from Golladay, so we’ll start there in this week’s mailbag. The Lions need Kenny Golladay. Of course, Kenny Golladay knows this, and perhaps he’s asking for more than what Bob Quinn is willing to spend. He’s caught 14 passes for just 146 yards, good for 10.4 a pop. -- @CallMeDjmA: Two things were very different about the Lions' defensive approach on Sunday.mlive.com
Snap counts: Detroit Lions use all 8 offensive linemen in Week 6 win over Jaguars
The Detroit Lions were mixing things around on the offensive line before losing their entire right side to dehydration issues on Sunday. Regardless, Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford wasn’t sacked, and the team accounted for 180 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. Not too shabby considering they were forced to use all eight active offensive linemen in Jacksonville. “I don’t know if I have ever been in a game where we have played all eight offensive linemen,” Lions coach Matt Patricia said. The Lions played the least amount of man coverage they had all season (39.1%).mlive.com
Ask Kyle: Matt Patricia is likely to survive the bye, but patience is wearing thin
ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions thought they were going to compete for the NFC North this year. Q: Is it realistically possible Sheila Ford will fire Patricia and or Quinn during the bye week? It was always a dicey proposition because of the COVID factor, and the win in Arizona essentially guaranteed Patricia would survive the bye. A good quarterback on an affordable contract is the second-most valuable asset in this game, behind only a good quarterback on a rookie contract. That also means I’ve seen some good seasons -- well, a good season anyway -- and a whole lot of bad.mlive.com
Matt Patricia’s Seat Is Starting To Heat Up!
The break will give the players an opportunity to recover while coach Matt Patricia and his staff try to figure out how to possibly turn around the season. Under Patricia, the Lions have become the league’s first team to lose six straight games — dating to last season — in which they led by double digits. Patricia said he meets with team owner Sheila Ford Hamp each week, but declined to share much about their conversations. The Lions are giving up 170 yards per game, 5.2 yards a carry, and nearly 10 first downs per game on the ground. The defensive end landed three hits on New Orleans’ Drew Brees and had a sack for the second straight week.detroit.cbslocal.com
Lions vs. Saints: Matchups to watch, key questions heading into Week 4 game
ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions have a chance to get back to .500 heading into their bye week with a Week 4 matchup with the New Orleans Saints. New Orleans allows 252 passing yards per game and will officially be without cornerbacks Janoris Jenkins and Marshon Lattimore. may play 60-something snaps,” Lions linebackers coach Ty McKenzie said. pic.twitter.com/34r69KMkkH — Seth Walder (@SethWalder) September 30, 2020Rookie to watch: DL John PenisiniJohn Penisini’s role has grown with each passing week. Detroit led the way through the first two games but played man coverage on only 55.6% of snaps last week.mlive.com
Lions' Marvin Jones looking forward to Kenny Golladay distracting defenses again amid slow start
ALLEN PARK -- Marvin Jones was expected to see an increased role with Kenny Golladay missing the first two games of the season. Instead, it’s been a somewhat slow start for the veteran Detroit Lions wide receiver through three games. Jones is averaging 43 yards per game, down 16.9 yards from last year’s marks. Just takes that kind of stuff, that kind of execution.”Matthew Stafford hit Kenny Golladay for a Lions touchdown. Obviously, sometimes you won’t get as much as you would like, but that doesn’t mean you just check out of the game,” Jones said.mlive.com
Jones' big day helps Packers beat Lions 42-21 in home opener
Jones rushed for a career-high 168 yards and scored three touchdowns, including a 75-yard breakaway, as the Green Bay Packers rallied from an early 11-point deficit to beat the Detroit Lions 42-21 on Sunday. After his first touchdown of the day, a 7-yard reception from Aaron Rodgers, Jones did a different kind of Lambeau Leap. Rodgers was 18 of 30 for 240 yards with touchdown passes to Jones and Robert Tonyan. Green Bay took the lead for good 17-14 on Rodgers’ 11-yard pass to Tonyan with 14 seconds left in the second quarter. Packers receiver Davante Adams (hamstring), center Corey Linsley (hand) and running back/receiver Tyler Ervin (concussion) left in the second half.
Quick observations: Lions regime heading for dangerous territory after 11th straight loss
The Detroit Lions aren’t even getting creative with how they lose anymore. Now Detroit has lost eight straight games against the division, 11 games overall, and this regime is fast-approaching a crossroads. They didn’t hit Rodgers a single time until the second half, after hitting Mitchell Trubisky just four times all last week. Aaron Jones led the way with 168 yards on 18 carries, 75 of which came on that long touchdown run to open the second half. -- The Lions continued their protests against police brutality for a second straight week.mlive.com

Why it’s time to buy fantasy football stock in Detroit Lions TE T.J. Hockenson
He’s rostered in 74.7% of ESPN fantasy football leagues but starting in only 25.6% of Week 2 lineups. The first resulted in an 11-yard reception for Danny Amendola, with Hockenson opening up the middle of the field. Hockenson scored 14.1 points in ESPN standard PPR leagues last week and is projected for 7.2 for Sunday’s matchup with the Packers. Cephus will get his looks in Week 2 but expect Hockenson and Jones to cut into that more. He’s owned in 42.1% of ESPN leagues and starting in only 7.3%.mlive.com

(AP Photo/Duane Burleson)DETROIT – Mitchell Trubisky perfectly lofted a 27-yard go-ahead touchdown pass to Anthony Miller with 1:54 remaining and the Chicago Bears held on to beat the Detroit Lions 27-23 Sunday. Trubisky threw three touchdown passes in the fourth quarter to help Chicago come back from a 17-point deficit. It looked familiar to Lions fans: Detroit opened last season by blowing an 18-point lead at Arizona and settling for a tie. Late in the game, Lions fans likely would've filled the facility with a chorus of boos.
Lions Archive: Lions Pull Off Stunner In Philly 27-24
Rasul Douglas returned it to the Lions 22, but an illegal block on Jenkins pushed it back to midfield. I gotta make the play. The Lions (2-0-1) remain undefeated and the Eagles (1-2) have lost two in a row. Carson Wentz threw a pair of touchdown passes to Nelson Agholor, but came up yards short on a scramble on fourth-and-8 late in the fourth. Emotional Day For Jones And The Lions

Jones was at the game but didnt play. I was very happy to see him today. The Lions lost both games to Green Bay this season on field goals with no time remaining. So, thought wed take a shot. The loss assured that the Lions will have a top-three pick in the draft.detroit.cbslocal.com
Slay And Winston Have Plenty To Play For
Jameis Winston has plenty to play for and Darius Slay does, too. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Detroit Lions have been eliminated from the playoff picture, putting their team goals out of reach. Winston, who intends to play in Detroit with a small fracture in his right thumb, is in the final year of the contract he signed as the No. He is among the NFL leaders with 1,157 yards receiving and eight touchdown catches. Chris Godwin ranks second in the league with 1,212 yards receiving.detroit.cbslocal.com
Detroit Lions analysis: 4 Stafford throws from win over Giants
Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford had a fantastic game Sunday in the Lions’ win over the New York Giants. The Lions fake a run and Stafford rolls right as Jones goes deep, Golladay half-heartedly runs a dig and the running back runs a backside wheel route. It was a bad decision and even worse throw right to the defender. It was good play design by Lions’ offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell and a good read and throw by Stafford. Stafford pitches to JD McKissic, who then throws back to Stafford who throws a deep post to Golladay for the score.

Adam Thielen caught the first of four TD passes from Cousins in the first quarter and the receiver didn't return because of a hamstring injury. Stafford was 30 of 45 for 364 yards with four TD passes and an interception on his last possession.

Detroit Lions analysis: Stafford's aggressiveness wins game -- but almost loses it, too
DETROIT, MI - SEPTEMBER 15: Matthew Stafford #9 of the Detroit Lions drops back to pass during the third quarter of the game against the Los Angeles Chargers at Ford Field on September 15, 2019 in Detroit, Michigan. Those elite throws are sometimes mixed in with less amazing decisions and results, as Lions fans saw on Stafford's two interceptions earlier in the game. Let's look at those INTs and two more great throws that helped the Lions beat the Chargers. Prior to the interception, the Lions steadily move the ball down the field and look like they're going to score. On the interception, the Lions roll Stafford out after a play action fake.
