Tigers’ Matt Manning finishes 2021 with a flourish, and states case for 2022 rotation spot
CHICAGO -- Matt Manning’s second-to-last start of the 2021 season gnawed at him for five days. On Sept. 27 in Detroit, Manning allowed six runs on four hits and five walks in 3 1/3 innings. That’s why it’s a good bet that he’ll be a member of the Detroit Tigers rotation at the start of next season. He’s had good days and bad days during his rookie season, but he’s rarely been overmatched. The case against penciling him in for a rotation spot is more direct: His 2021 season, taken as a whole, was not very good.mlive.com
Tigers squander 4-run lead, strong outing by Matt Manning in loss to White Sox

Question isn’t if Detroit Tigers need a starting pitcher in free agency -- it’s whether they need 2

Tigers rally after falling behind 8-0, but can’t complete comeback vs. Athletics

The Athletics (74-60) took two of three from the Tigers (63-72) this week and won the season series 6-1. The Tigers built a 10-2 lead, knocking Angels starter Jose Quintana out of the game in the second inning. Cabrera didn’t hit his 500th home run, but did single and score in the first inning and then hit a bases-clearing double in the second. Although Cabrera didn’t go deep, Zack Short, Jeimer Candelario and Willi Castro all hit solo home runs for the Tigers. Tigers plot course to get rookie starters to finish line
BALTIMORE -- Casey Mize won’t start on his normal scheduled day on Sunday at Comerica Park. In fact, there’s about to be a new normal for Detroit Tigers rookies Casey Mize and Tarik Skubal. That means Mize might pitch every sixth, seventh or eighth day instead of every fifth day. If all goes well, Mize and Skubal can pitch to the finish line without being shut down due to workload limitations. Matt Manning fell behind Tigers’ other elite pitching prospects. He’s catching up faster than you realize.
Seven starts into his big-league career, Detroit Tigers rookie pitcher Matt Manning is showing real progress. He’s learning on the job, much as Casey Mize and Tarik Skubal did one year ago. The 23-year-old has shown an openness to experimentation under the tutelage of pitching coach Chris Fetter that has already paid dividends. But now he’s catching up, and facing some of the same hurdles that Mize and Skubal endured a year ago. “The curveball last night was the best he’s had since he’s been a big-leaguer.mlive.com

What does Tigers’ 2022 rotation look like without Spencer Turnbull? It’s not nearly as good.
DETROIT -- Will Spencer Turnbull be back in time for the Detroit Tigers’ playoff run in 2022? Will there even be a playoff run in 2022 without Turnbull in the mix? But there’s little doubt that the Tigers’ recent success has rekindled hopes of serious contention as early as 2022. Now he’ll miss the rest of the 2021 season and very likely all (or almost all) of the 2022 season. The frustrating thing is we lose a really good pitcher.”Today, the foundation of the 2022 rotation has three pitchers, one fewer than planned: Casey Mize, Tarik Skubal and Matthew Boyd.mlive.com
Tigers bring back Matt Manning to start Wednesday vs. Rangers
DETROIT -- After a two-week break, Matt Manning will be back in the Detroit Tigers’ starting rotation. 9 options for Detroit Tigers to fill starting pitcher hole: 3 trade targets, 3 free agents, 3 Mud Hens
The Detroit Tigers lost another starting pitcher to injury this weekend, opening a new hole in an already decimated rotation. Will they look to the minor leagues, free agency or even the trade market to fill that vacancy?
Wily Peralta is unexpected rescuer of Tigers’ depleted rotation
DETROIT -- Wily Peralta has been the Detroit Tigers’ best starting pitcher over the last four weeks. After struggling starter Jose Ureña went on the injured list on Saturday, the Tigers’ rotation is even more thin. The Tigers do have five starters, but there are some caveats:* Peralta, who threw 7 scoreless innings in Sunday’s victory, has no restrictions. In five starts since June 26, Peralta has allowed just one earned run in 26 2/3 innings of work. It’s just the fifth time in Tigers’ history that a pitcher has gone five starts having allowed one unearned run or fewer.mlive.com
Tigers option Matt Manning to Toledo following start, bring back veteran lefty
The Detroit Tigers optioned rookie right-hander Matt Manning to Triple-A Toledo following his start on Friday. Manning can be recalled again on July 19 to make his next scheduled start after the All-Star break. The move will create space for the Tigers to activate veteran lefty Derek Holland from the 10-day injured list on Saturday. Manning, 23, went 1-3 with a 6.95 ERA in five starts since being called up from Toledo three weeks ago. Rookie Matt Manning starts strong, but Twins top Tigers again
Rookie starter Matt Manning didn’t give up his first hit until the fifth inning but the Minnesota Twins scored four runs in the sixth to beat the Detroit Tigers 4-2 on Friday night at Target Field in Minneapolis. The Twins (37-50) have taken the first two games of the four-game series against the Tigers (40-49). Tigers starter Tarik Skubal also didn’t allow a hit through exactly 4 1/3 innings on Thursday, marking the first time since 2018 that rookie pitchers had accomplished that feat on back-to-back nights. In the sixth, Manning exited after allowing a hit and a walk. Tigers mailbag: Would you listen to trade offers for Spencer Torkelson?
The Detroit Tigers are 29-22 since May 8, which is the best two-month stretch (by far) since 2016. Although it would be hard, almost impossible, to envision a scenario in which the Tigers would trade Torkelson, let’s address it as a hypothetical. Torkelson is playing some third base now, but will probably end up as a first baseman in the big leagues. If Torkelson just hits well in the big leagues, he will have a nice career like C.J. So maybe the Tigers would be tempted to listen if a team offered a package of players for Torkelson.mlive.com

It’s been a fun 2 months of Tigers’ baseball. But a long, tough summer still looms.
The Detroit Tigers have played above-average baseball for the last seven weeks, something that hasn’t happened since 2016. But don’t let the euphoria overshadow the fact that this could be a long, tough summer. Julio Teheran should be back at some point this summer, although his usefulness after such a long injury layoff remains to be seen. He won’t become Mize or Skubal overnight, but Mize and Skubal didn’t become Mize and Skubal overnight, either. There may even be times when the Tigers feel closer to the dismal summer of 2019 than the optimism of 2022.mlive.com

And I think we’ve shown on this team that when our starting pitching gives us a chance to win, we’ve played a lot better baseball. No, wait! Miggy tosses keepsake baseball from Matt Manning’s first strikeout into seats
When Miguel Cabrera tossed a keepsake baseball from Matt Manning’s first Major League strikeout into the seats behind the home dugout at Angel Stadium, he got plenty of teasing from his teammates. “I told Miggy he’d have to give the fan whatever the fan wanted: Signed bat, signed ball, signed jersey, whatever,” Hinch said. One ball was removed from play after Manning’s first pitch of the game, and Hinch said that might have confused Cabrera. “In the world of Miggy being Miggy, I think he kind of lost (track),” Hinch said. “I think Miggy had forgotten this was going to be first strikeout.”mlive.com

Tigers’ Matt Manning is making his MLB debut tonight, and he plans to fight to stay.
Manning, a 23-year-old who the Tigers selected with the ninth overall pick in 2016, was the last of the three to arrive.
