So general manager Al Avila, when he met with reporters before Wednesday’s game at Comerica Park, made one thing clear from the outset: Nobody’s happy with the Tigers’ record. Obviously he’s a better player and history shows that, and I think he’s working towards that. DETROIT -- Riley Greene is one step closer to Detroit. The Tigers outfield prospect has been transferred to Triple-A Toledo to continue his rehab assignment. He’ll join the Mud Hens this week in Columbus after playing a couple of games for Class A Lakeland. Greene suffered a broken foot in a spring training game two months ago, just days before he was likely to be named the Tigers’ Opening Day center fielder. The Tigers’ current semi-regular outfield is made up of Willi Castro, Derek Hill and Daz Cameron, none of whom were on the Opening Day roster.
mlive.comRiley Greene’s return could help rescue Tigers’ outfield
When Riley Greene suffered a broken foot in spring training and the Detroit Tigers acquired Austin Meadows two days later, the big question on everyone’s mind seems almost laughable now: What are the Tigers going to do with all those outfielders? Victor Reyes got off to a hot start, got hurt, rehabbed, returned and then got hurt again. Even if Meadows (vertigo), Reyes (quad strain) and Greene (foot) came off the injured list on the same day, the Tigers would have room for all of them. TAMPA, Fla. -- The Detroit Tigers had kicked around the idea of adding an outfielder during the offseason but opted to invest their resources in more pressing areas. Then Riley Greene fouled off a Gerrit Cole fastball, fracturing the bottom of his right foot.
mlive.comTigers trade prospect to acquire outfielder Austin Meadows from Rays
LAKELAND, Fla. -- Two days after prospect Riley Greene suffered a broken foot, upending the club’s outfield plans, the Detroit Tigers have found an impressive replacement. The Tigers have traded infield prospect Isaac Paredes to the Tampa Bay Rays for outfielder Austin Meadows, the team announced late Monday. Meadows, who turns 27 next month, is likely to become the Tigers’ everyday left fielder, joining Akil Baddoo and Robbie Grossman. Meadows hit .234 with a .772 OPS (117 OPS+) in 591 plate appearances last season. His younger brother Parker, also an outfielder, was drafted by the Tigers in the second round in 2018.
mlive.comWhat does Tigers’ outfield look like after injuries to Riley Greene, Derek Hill?
LAKELAND, Fla. -- The crushing news that Detroit Tigers rookie outfielder Riley Greene would miss the start of the season after breaking his foot could have created a huge opportunity for fellow center fielder Derek Hill. Hinch announced Saturday that Hill would not be ready for the start of the season after suffering a low-grade hamstring strain. Hill, 26, was the Tigers’ first-round pick in 2014 and is known for his speed and outfield defense. Now it appears the Tigers will head north with only three true outfielders: Reyes, Akil Baddoo and Robbie Grossman. Six pitchers left for five spots: Jason Foley, Rony Garcia, Will Vest, Drew Hutchison, Jacob Barnes, Chase Anderson.

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Detroit Tigers rookie outfielder Riley Greene, one of the game’s top prospects who was widely expected to make his Major League debut in six days, has fractured a bone in his right foot. Greene fouled a ball off his foot while facing New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole on Friday afternoon. Hinch said initial X-rays appeared to indicate a fracture, but the Tigers wanted them to be reviewed by a foot specialist, who then confirmed the bad news. Greene, 21, was considered all but certain to be the Tigers’ Opening Day center fielder. With both Greene and Hill out, the Tigers will have only three true outfielders on the roster: Akil Baddoo, Robbie Grossman and Victor Reyes.
mlive.comTigers prospect Riley Greene leaves game with foot injury
LAKELAND, Fla. -- Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene left Friday’s game in the third inning after suffering a foot injury. Greene fouled a ball off his foot while facing New York Yankees. One pitch later, he tripled to the center field wall. Greene, 21, was considered all but certain to be the Tigers’ Opening Day center fielder in one week. The Tigers would likely use a combination of Akil Baddoo, Victor Reyes and Derek Hill in center until Greene is ready to return.
mlive.comTigers’ final Opening Day roster projection -- and a bonus prediction of their roster on May 2
There are practical reasons why that probably won’t be announced until the end of camp, but their spots on the Opening Day roster appear quite safe. The only real roster drama is down to the nitty-gritty: The final pitchers and the final bench player. The Opening Day roster is always a temporary snapshot of one moment in time, but that will be especially true in 2022. With that in mind, we’re offering two final roster projections -- one for Opening Day on April 8 and one for May 2. Dustin Garneau, CNotesMost of the camp battles have already been decided, but the final roster spot may come down to Reyes or Derek Hill.
mlive.comOn what would have been Opening Day, Riley Greene keeps making big plays
DUNEDIN, Fla. -- If the lockout had never happened, and the season never delayed, the Detroit Tigers would have opened the regular season in Seattle on Thursday afternoon. Beyond the numbers, he looks like a big-leaguer, and Thursday’s highlight-reel play was a big reason why. Greene made an impressive play on the ball in right, even though he’s spent much of the spring in center field. That’s also where he’s likely to be on Opening Day in Detroit on April 8. That’s six more chances to see Greene make big plays before the fun starts for real.
mlive.comWill Riley Greene, Spencer Torkelson take detour to Toledo? New rules impact Tigers prospects
LAKELAND, Fla. -- Rookies Riley Greene and Spencer Torkelson may go north with the big-league club in a few days, but Detroit Tigers manager A.J. And others suspected something more sinister: The Tigers are laying the groundwork to delay the arrival of one or both prospects for financial reasons. It wouldn’t be the first time a Major League team has done so, and the Tigers have real incentives to consider it. Are those incentives enough to sway teams who would otherwise be tempted to delay the arrival of their top prospects? But for a team like the Tigers who plan to contend again in 2022 after years in the wilderness, the impact of Greene and Torkelson is vitally important.

There is a lot of hype surrounding Detroit Tigers rookies Riley Greene and Spencer Torkelson. The pair are still in the running for a roster spot and have been the two biggest names in the list of Tigers prospects. As evident by its most recent cover, Baseball America is buying into the hype. Greene and Torkelson are featured on the latest Baseball America cover and given the title of “Tiger Kings” while adding that the pair “will help Detroit claw its way back to the top.”In a Tuesday article, Baseball America writer Kyle Glaser said Torkelson and Greene -- along with Tigers’ the offseason moves of picking up shortstop Javier Baez and lefthander Eduardo Rodriguez -- could make the Tigers winners again. “The moves are indicative of the Tigers’ belief that they are ready to contend for a winning record and, potentially, a playoff spot,” Glaser wrote.
mlive.comTigers’ final-week roster battles: 14 players, 8 spots up for grabs
LAKELAND, Fla. -- The latest round of cuts has clarified the battles for the final week of Detroit Tigers spring training. Although technically there are 42 players left in camp, several players can be eliminated from the competition due to injuries or visa issues. * Pitchers Michael Pineda and Wily Peralta will not be on the Opening Day roster due to their late arrival in camp. Hinch will use the two extra April roster spots on pitching, giving the Tigers a roster of 15 pitchers and 13 position players. mlive.comTigers’ Opening Day roster projection: Who will make the cut?
LAKELAND, Fla. -- There are only 16 days left in spring training and we’re finally unveiling our first Detroit Tigers’ Opening Day roster projection. The Tigers weren’t done building the roster, so projecting it was nearly impossible. In fact, it’s possible that three or four players signed within the last 10 days could be among the players who come north for Opening Day on April 8 at Comerica Park. We also don’t know whether newly signed pitchers Michael Pineda and Wily Peralta will get their visas approved in time to be ready for Opening Day. I reserve the right to change my mind, but for now I’m putting both Greene and Torkelson on the Opening Day roster and the everyday lineup.
mlive.comTigers GM says there will no service-time tricks with Torkelson, Greene
That’s no guarantee that first baseman Spencer Torkelson and outfielder Riley Greene will make the Opening Day roster. But Avila said the Tigers’ decision-making would be guided solely by the goal of building the best team. While aware of those incentives, Avila said the most important factor is whether the presence of Greene and Torkelson will help the Tigers win. That’s our expectation.”The Tigers open the Grapefruit League exhibition season on Friday at 1:05 p.m. against the Philadelphia Phillies. Torkelson and Greene will have 19 games to state their case.

Two players -- right-handed pitcher Spencer Turnbull and catcher Jake Rogers -- are expected to miss all or most of the 2022 season with injury. mlive.comThere will be baseball in 2022 -- at least in Toledo, Grand Rapids and other minor-league parks
The Toledo Mud Hens, the Tigers’ Triple-A affiliate, reminded fans Tuesday that their opener on April 5 was unaffected by the MLB announcement. “We can’t wait to welcome all of you back to the ballpark for the 20th season of baseball at Fifth Third Field,” the Mud Hens wrote. There will also be baseball in Grand Rapids (Tigers), Lansing (Oakland Athletics) and Midland (Los Angeles Dodgers). If the lockout ends while the Mud Hens are in the middle of the series, do all those vets just jump ship and head to Lakeland? But one thing is certain: There will be baseball in some capacity in Toledo, Grand Rapids, Lansing and Midland.
mlive.com2022 PECOTA projections for Tigers: Some good signs, but mostly discouraging outlook
Named for former player Bill Pecota, PECOTA stands for Player Empirical Comparison and Optimization Test Algorithm. (You can read about the 2022 version here and, if you’re a Baseball Prospectus member, download all the data here). Once the lockout ends, the Tigers seem likely to add one more starting pitcher and perhaps a relief arm or two. PECOTA sees Jeimer Candelario having another solid season (.756 OPS, 15 homers, 29 doubles), contributing 2.0 WARP and a 105 DRC+. So PECOTA thinks the Tigers’ bullpen -- like much of the roster as a whole -- is below average.
