HUDSONVILLE – The Kalamazoo Christian volleyball team didn’t panic when they fell behind 1-0 to Shelby in the opening set of the Division 3 state quarterfinals on Tuesday night from Hudsonville Unity Christian High School. The Comets will face Calumet, who defeated McBain in straight sets, in the Division 3 state semifinals at 2 p.m. Friday. They responded with wins of 25-18 and 25-23 to regain momentum before Shelby took Set 4 25-19 to push the match to a fifth set. Kalamazoo Christian takes Set 5 over Shelby 15-8 to advance to Friday’s state semifinals in Battle Creek.

The last time the Shelby volleyball program won a regional championship was in 2017 when the Tigers overpowered Beaverton in straight sets as head coach Tom Weirich donned flashy purple pants with orange paw-prints. Weirich broke out his old good luck charm again Thursday night, as the Tigers took on Grand Rapids NorthPointe Christian in the Division 3 regional championship game from Holton High School. “Momentum can be a funny thing in volleyball,” said Weirich. It’s going to be a huge matchup, but Shelby is not going to be afraid of anybody.

AMBER TOWNSHIP, MI – A 70-year-old Shelby woman died after her vehicle was rear-ended Tuesday morning, Oct. 25, on U.S. 10 near Ludington, officials said. Emergency responders were dispatched just before 8 a.m. to the scene west of Dennis Road in front of Watson’s Car Dealership, Mason County Press reports. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman was traveling eastbound on U.S. 10 and attempted to make a left turn into the car dealership when her vehicle was struck by an eastbound Chevy pickup truck driven by a 19-year-old Ludington man, police said. The crash is under investigation.

WHITEHALL, MI – A 79-year-old Shelby man was rescued, and avoided injury, after falling through the ice in a portion of Muskegon County’s White Lake. Shortly after 11 a.m. Thursday, March 17, Whitehall police officers were dispatched to Goodrich Park in the 100 block of South Lake Street for a report of a man falling through the ice. Witnesses at the park told police they saw the man walk out onto the ice and fall in, Whitehall Police Chief Roger Squiers told MLive/Muskegon Chronicle. White Lake Fire Authority personnel, wearing gumby suits, were able to pull the man from the water. Police were assisted at the scene by White Lake Fire Authority, Montague Fire Department, White Lake Ambulance and Pro Med Ambulance.

A Michigan State Police trooper and Mason County sheriff’s deputy removed the driver from the Ford Explorer. The woman was transported to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries where she remained overnight for further observation, officials with the Michigan State Police Hart Post said. Witnesses observed the driver drifting back-and-forth from the oncoming eastbound travel lanes of U.S. 10 to the westbound travel lanes as well as the shoulder of U.S. 10, according to police. Alcohol is currently being investigated as a possible contributing factor in the traffic crash, according to Michigan State Police. Any witnesses who did not speak to police at the scene are asked to contact the Michigan State Police Hart Post at 231-873-2171.

UDisc, the leading disc golf course directory and scorekeeping app, named Flip City Disc Golf Park in Shelby the 9th best disc golf course in its 2022 ranking of the top courses. There are more than 13,000 disc golf courses spread across 80 countries, about 500 of which are in Michigan. Flip City is a 24-hole course built on 80 acres of farmland founded by Bill McKenzie, who has been playing disc golf for more than 40 years. OCEANA COUNTY, MI - A 23-year-old Shelby resident died early Sunday morning after the car he was riding in struck a tree in Hart Township, according to a news release from the Michigan State Police. The crash occurred around 12:45 a.m. Sunday on W Taylor Road around North 72nd Avenue, according to the release. The injured were taken to a nearby hospital with the assistance of the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office, Hart Fire Department and Life EMS. The Michigan State Police Hart Post is still investigating the incident and believes alcohol was a factor in the crash, according to the release. Shelby took an early lead and secured the win in the first game, but the momentum stopped there. NorthPointe Christian rallied to win the match, 3-1. The Tigers jumped out to a 25-20 win in the first game. The Friday night football schedule is going to be a little lighter this week as a pair of area games will not be played. Both the Montague/Mason County Central game and the Muskegon Oakridge/Shelby game have been canceled. “We were hoping to get a game this week, and it just didn’t work out,” Dennett said, adding that he and the team are trying to see the positives of a week off. This week has also been about working in the game plan for the Whitehall game. For the Oakridge/Shelby game, Oakridge athletic director Rick Ruel said in an email that Shelby had to cancel due to low numbers from a combination of injury and illness.

Republican Katie Boyd Britt entered the race for Alabama’s open U.S. Senate seat Tuesday promising to “put Alabama first” while stressing her experience as the former leader of a state business group and former chief of staff to retiring U.S. Sen. Two Republicans are already in the race: Congressman Mo Brooks, who is armed with an endorsement from former President Donald Trump, and Lynda Blanchard, a businesswoman who was Trump’s ambassador to Slovenia. Meanwhile, Montague’s girls team got a scare from Shelby, but the Wildcats gutted it out and stayed unbeaten. Elsewhere, Whitehall’s boys team finished the regular season strong by capping a perfect West Michigan Conference season. North Carolina Bloods Gang Members Found Guilty of Racketeering Conspiracy Involving Murders
A federal jury convicted four North Carolina members of the United Blood Nation (UBN or Bloods) street gang of charges including Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) conspiracy involving multiple murders. In May of 2017, 83 UBN gang members were indicted in the Western District of North Carolina for crimes including RICO conspiracy. Dricko Dashon Huskey, aka Drizzy, 27, of Shelby, North Carolina, Renaire Roshique Lewis Jr., aka Banz, 25, of Shelby, North Carolina, Alandus Montrell Smith, aka Kadafia, 29, of Shelby, North Carolina and Jonathan Wray, aka Jon Jon/Yungin, 28, of Lawndale, North Carolina, were convicted by a federal jury sitting in Charlotte following a nearly three-week trial. UBN members have distinct hand signs and written codes, which are used to identify other members and rival gang members, as well as to try to thwart law enforcement efforts against them. Attorneys Matt Warren and Christopher Hess for the Western District of North Carolina are prosecuting the case.

Derrick Snelson and his daughter, Shelby, were on Lake Eufaula with Lethal Guide Service, a hunting guide business, when they made the catch on September 1. They took the animal to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources for an official measurement, which came in at 14 feet and 1.75 inches, said Darrell Brown, owner of Lethal Guide Service. Georgia has an official alligator hunting season to help manage the state's flourishing gator population.
