SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Another tense night in Shelby Township as protesters stood outside township offices and marched. In recent weeks there have been a handful of counter protesters, people who support the Shelby Township Police Department and president Donald Trump. Shelby Township police made it clear to protesters that they would not tolerate anyone in the street stopping traffic. Rev. W.J. Rideout arrested after protesting in Shelby Township
SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A well-known activist was arrested on Wednesday night in Shelby Township. Rideout was arrested in connection with Monday’s protest outside the police station. Rideout and dozens of other protesters blocked the intersection of 23 Mile Road and Van Dyke. They were calling for police chief Robert Shelide to be fired for social media comments he made about the George Floyd protests. SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Shelby Township Police Chief Robert Shelide is back on the job after being suspended for comments he made on social media about the George Floyd protests. Shelide returned to work on Friday and protesters showed up on Monday in opposition. At one point, protesters shut down a major intersection. On Monday, protesters marched up and down Van Dyke. The march culminated at Van Dyke and 23 Mile Road, where protesters shut the intersection down.

Protests against police chief, trustee escalate in Shelby Township
SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Protests took a turn in Shelby Township when people calling for the firing of the city’s police chief were met by counter protesters. Protesters gathered in front of Shelby Township Municipal Offices to call for the firing of police chief Robert Shelide and trustee John Vermeulen. Including, an incident where a man shoved a bottle of water in a young woman’s face and then she punched him.

SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A protest was held on Wednesday along Van Dyke near the Shelby Township offices to call attention to comments posted on social media by Shelby Township Police Chief Robert Shelide and trustee John Vermeulen. Shelide has apologized and will go 30 days without pay and he will have to go to cultural and sensitivity training. READ: Shelby Township trustees vote to suspend police chief after anti-protest tweetsShortly after the protest began, another group of protesters with a different message joined them. Protesters calling for the firing of Shelide almost immediately saw signs and flags flying that they weren’t expecting. Eventually, the groups settled on opposite sides of Van Dyke, campaigning for the support of passing cars.
