Michigan National Guard soldiers return home from Washington DC
DETROIT โ About 1,000 Michigan National Guard (MING) soldiers returned home Monday after a U.S. Capitol support mission. The National Guard members were deployed Jan. 29 to the National Capitol Region in Washington D.C. where they provided support to the D.C. National Guard and Capitol police for a post-inaugural security mission. According to a press release, the soldiers performed a variety of duties such as providing additional security, training and logistical support. โThe men and women of the Michigan National Guard have always stepped up whenever called upon and their support for the Capitol region was no different,โ said Gov. โThe Michigan National Guard is ready to serve our state and nation whenever the opportunity arises, but we are always glad to have the soldiers return home.โ
Rep. Amash proposes bill to end legal immunity for police
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. โ In a letter to congressional colleagues, Libertarian Rep. Justin Amash (MI-3) said he'll be introducing a bill to do away with the law that protects police officers from being sued while doing their jobs. Henning teaches criminal law and professional responsibility at Wayne State University. โImmunity has been part of the system since the mid-1960s,โ he said. โWe're going to see that police officer, being charged with a crime,โ Henning said. Michigan National Guard to support Grand Rapids peace, clean-up efforts following violent protests
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. The Michigan National Guard was activated Sunday at the request of Grand Rapids Mayor Rosalynn Bliss to support the city after protests turned violent Saturday night. Protestors moved through Grand Rapids later Saturday night and into Sunday morning, setting fires, smashing windows and looting after a day of peaceful protests.
