Tigers in mix for another free-agent starter? Steven Matz expected to make decision soon.
Left-handed starting pitcher Steven Matz is accepting bids and could pick his new team as early as Wednesday. MLB Network reported that the Detroit Tigers are among eight clubs still pursuing the 30-year-old New York native. Matz did not get a qualifying offer from the Blue Jays, so his signing would not require draft pick compensation. The Red Sox recently lost left-handed starter Eduardo Rodriguez, who signed a five-year, $77 million deal with the Tigers, so Matz would serve as a slightly less expensive replacement. If the Tigers signed both Rodriguez and Matz, it would represent an impressive financial investment in starting pitching but might also call into question the Tigers’ willingness to splurge on a shortstop.mlive.com

After Miguel Cabrera hits No. 500, Tigers fight back to beat Jays in 11 innings
The Tigers’ rally appeared to fizzle in the ninth after Willi Castro smacked a two-out ground-rule double. Pinch-hitter Harold Castro hit a routine grounder to second base. Marcus Semien, considered among the league’s best infielders, bounced a throw to first base, allowing Harold Castro to reach base and Willi Castro to score. McNeil countered with a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the fifth, but Daz couldn't make it stand. An All-Star with Seattle in 2018, Daz labored through a brutal 2019 with a 5.59 ERA and seven blown saves.

Braves All-Star starter Mike Soroka, who won his previous two matchups with deGrom, allowed four hits in six outstanding innings. If deGrom is unable to go on opening day against Atlanta on July 24, Marcus Stroman or Steven Matz could get the ball.
