Man intentionally rams Michigan county building, generator at sheriff’s office, officials say
MACOMB COUNTY, MI – A man rammed into a government building with a vehicle twice Saturday evening and then drove to the local sheriff’s office and rammed a portable generator before turning himself in, The Detroit News reports. The 28-year-old suspect admitted the rammings were intentional, Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham told the newspaper. First, the suspect allegedly crashed twice into the glass portion of the first floor of the county administration building, the report said. Next, he allegedly drove about three miles to the sheriff’s office and crashed into a portable generator, causing minor damage. Based on the man’s statement to deputies, it appears he was suffering from a mental health problem, the report said.

Sinawi, 49, of West Bloomfield, is charged with one count of tampering with evidence and one count of lying to a police officer. Baher Hanna, 37, of Novi, is charged with possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon and tampering with evidence. Hilal Haio, 50, of Walled Lake, and Viktor Keqaj, 32, of Farmington Hills, are both charged with tampering with evidence.

Last September, 59 percent of voters approved of Whitmer’s performance and 38 percent disapproved. Thirty-nine percent of independent voters approved of Whitmer’s performance, compared to 51 percent who didn’t. Some analysts said Whitmer’s falling approval with independents hurts her those most, saying that Michigan elections are decided by independent voters.

In an article by The Detroit News, the freezers are part of a plan to offer COVID-19 vaccines to their workforce. The Pfizer vaccine requires an ultra-cold -112°F storage temperature, which would seem to explain Ford’s recent purchase. The Moderna vaccine can be stored at -4°F or below, making it within the realm of a normal freezer and can handle being kept for a few hours at room temperature. UofM Enrollment Is Down With A Small Increase In Undergrads
According to The Detroit News, the university announced Friday enrollment is down 183 students or 0.5%. The pandemic has hit UofM hard with huge losses in its many campuses and health system. Last fall overall enrollment was 48,090 but this semester enrollment is at 47,907… a difference of 183 students. For the University of Michigan, which has a large number of international students in undergrad and post-graduate schools, UofM confirms COVID-19 has had a large effect. According to the Detroit News, of the 11,941 international students who were offered admission to study, only 28% of those approved applicants actually enrolled.

CBS Detroit – After the Michigan Supreme Court ruled that Governor Whitmer’s executive orders were unconstitutional under the 1945 Emergency Powers Act, the Governor appealed for clarification that she had a transition window until October 30 to work with the legislature before the court’s orders took effect. In his dissent, Berstein had concerns about the “prospect of discontinued unemployment benefits”, as Whitmer’s now-unconstitutional executive orders provided for another six weeks of unemployment benefits. According to the Detroit News, the Mackinac Center for Public policy is currently reviewing the legality of orders issued by MDHHS. We are currently looking at the legality of the governor’s latest actions.”In the Michigan Supreme Court ruling, the court emphasized that it leaves the governor many open avenues to work with the Legislature “in a cooperative spirit and constitutional manner to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.” Because a Grand Rapids federal district court asked the Michigan Supreme Court for clarification on a case before it, the state’s Supreme Court’s decision is final, and there is no avenue for Governor Whitmer to pursue the matter to the United States Supreme Court. The Michigan Legislature hasn’t passed any law or resolution on how to combat COVID-19 yet.

However, Senator Gary Peters with many other Democrats believe Trump shouldn’t make the decision for Supreme Court Justice. In the Fox and Friends interview, President Trump said “We’re looking for somebody who’s brilliant, really understands the law and abides by the Constitution,”. Also on the list from Michigan at the time was retired Michigan Supreme Court Judge Robert Young and Judge Raymond M. Kethledge who also sits on the U.S. 6th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals.

Senate Majority Leader Leads Charge To Limit Emergency Powers
CBS Detroit In an article by the Detroit News, Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirky (R-Clarkdale) is supporting the idea of a petition to limit Governor Whitmers emergency powers. This was in reply to a question about creating a citizen-led petition to change the 1945 Emergency Powers Act, which currently allows the governor to use emergency powers without the approval of the legislature, and allows the Governor to deiced when an emergency ends without legislative approval. Whitmers emergency powers could happen this week, but he was reluctant. Republicans in the Legislature refers to the 1976 Emergency Management Act, which grants the Governor emergency powers, however, the law requires the Legislature to grant approval for an extension after a declaration has been declared for 28 days. The Democrats on the other side of the aisle point to the 1945 Emergency Powers Act, saying that the governor has the ability to say when an emergency is over.

The investigation goes back to the federal investigation involving bribery and kickback allegations from UAW officials who operated the Center for Human Resources Training Center with GM. The investigation has been ongoing for three years now, and in the process, three UAW officials have pleaded guilty and are awaiting sentencing. Wayne State pledges free tuition program for Detroit residents, calling it a life-changer
DETROIT Incoming freshmen from Detroit will receive a large financial break if they want to earn a college degree at Wayne State University, a report from The Detroit News said. To qualify for the Heart of Detroit Tuition Pledge, students must graduate from any Detroit high school or GED program in 2020 or after and live in the city. The pledge will only be available for the fall and winter semesters. The Heart of Detroit Tuition Pledge will only be available for fall and winter semesters. WSU offers a 30 percent tuition discount to students enrolled during spring and summer semesters.

Powell was the countys highest ranking African American employee as Health and Community Services director. She revealed during an Oct. 8 press conference with her attorney, Nabih Ayad, at the Penobscot Building in Detroit that shes suing Hackel and Rea in Macomb County Circuit Court. Powell is a defendant in a separate whistleblower lawsuit filed in federal court in June against her and the county, the Free Press reported. As soon as I reached out to the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, I was terminated by the deputy county executive, Powell said at the news conference.

Maurice Cox stepping down as Detroits planning director
In a potential setback for Detroits citywide planning efforts, news leaked that Maurice Cox is departing his job as director of the Planning and Development Department with the city. The Detroit News reports that hes expected to take a similar job as the top planning executive for the city of Chicago. Cox declined to comment on the story, but a source within the city confirmed the information. Cox was appointed by Mayor Mike Duggan to his post in 2015 with the directive of bringing planning to the neighborhoods. I feel strongly that Detroits neighborhoods are receiving the attention that they deserve and people feel strongly that they have a road map for the quality of life for neighborhoods, whether its streets, parks, or greenways.
