Aaron Rodgers-led Packers facing Lions for reward, not risks
Aaron Rodgers knows the Green Bay Packers, who have clinched the NFC's No. 1 seed, can't improve their playoff positioning with a win over the lowly Detroit Lions. The reigning NFL MVP still wants to play Sunday at Ford Field, even though that would increase his chances of getting injured. “There’s risk every time you take the field," Rodgers said.news.yahoo.com
Lions only 4-point underdogs while uncertainty surrounds how much Packers will play starters in Week 18
ALLEN PARK -- Nobody seems to be entirely sure when it comes to how much the Green Bay Packers will play their starters or not against the Detroit Lions in Week 18, including most oddsmakers. Oddsmakers have the Lions between 3.5- and four-point underdogs heading into this one, with the over/under total at 44.5 points. Rodgers has stood out at the top of the pack in a year of down quarterback play across the league while leading the 13-3 Packers to another division title and first-round bye. The Packers quarterback is the frontrunner for his fourth MVP award heading into the finale, completing 68.6% of his passes for 3,977 yards with 35 touchdowns to only four interceptions. “Right now the mindset is going into this is we’re going to play our guys and we’re going to approach it like every other game,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said.mlive.com
Lions tweak practice to focus on passing attack, keep injured QB Jared Goff involved ahead of finale
ALLEN PARK -- Jared Goff isn’t sure if he’ll get the go-ahead to start in the season finale, but the Detroit Lions quarterback sure hopes to get the chance to pick up where he left off. I said earlier in the week I’d be pretty disappointed if I didn’t make it happen. He’s completed nearly 70% of his passes for 898 yards with nine touchdowns and only two interceptions through his last four starts. “Was playing pretty well, and our offense was really starting to get some momentum going and that’s really the bummer. He was four-of-seven for 87 yards on attempts of 10 to 19 yards, hitting one of two tries for 42 yards when throwing 20-plus yards downfield.mlive.com
Dan Campbell feeling encouraged, not discouraged, by QB Tim Boyle’s third start for Detroit Lions
ALLEN PARK -- Dan Campbell is well aware that Detroit Lions quarterback Tim Boyle has six interceptions through three starts, including three thrown during the 51-29 loss in Seattle over the weekend. Campbell credited Boyle for running the offense through all the kills and checks in the plan, crediting him for his communication. Thought he read coverages pretty good,” Campbell said Monday afternoon. I think there’s some good things in there. I think he’s a quick thinker and I think he’s going to learn from this and be better for it.”Related headlines:Lions’ Amon-Ra St. Brown knows the 16 teams that took a receiver before him.mlive.com
Lions grades: Sloppy offense takes too long to wake up, defense gets rolled in 51-29 loss to Seahawks
The Detroit Lions (2-13-1) lost 51-29 to the Seattle Seahawks (6-10) in Week 17 action, with the sloppy offense taking too long to wake up and the defense getting absolutely rolled. The Lions were two-of-six on third down, not even sniffing the red zone while trailing 31-7. Boyle then opened the second half with an interception on the first snap after kickoff, with the Seahawks extending their lead to 38-7 two plays later. After that, he cleaned some things up, looking downfield as the Lions threw caution to the wind, but still finished with consecutive interceptions on consecutive snaps late in the fourth quarter. Boyle completed 22 of 37 passes for 262 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions.mlive.com
Inside the locker room: Lions QB Tim Boyle kicking self, banking lessons after throwing 3 interceptions
“I expect myself along with my coaches and my teammates for me to continue to get better,” Boyle said. But, you know, you’re always going to remember the bad ones. Reed go up and make a play, with Boyle looking downfield for Amon-Ra St. Brown, leaving it much too short for the fourth-round rookie. “They gave us the coverage we were looking for, but the corner made a good play, kinda sluffing off and adjusting to the throw. And there again, that’s after you watch the tape and see if there’s something there that’s, you know -- I know this.mlive.com
As the Lions near fourth-down record, a failed attempt costs them dearly in Seattle
SEATTLE -- Dan Campbell left his offense on the field for a fourth-and-inches to open Sunday’s game against the Seahawks. “Whenever you’re fourth-and-inches and you get stuffed, there is some, ‘oh, that really sucks,’” said Tim Boyle, who made a second straight start for Jared Goff at quarterback. “I don’t think it really affected our whole game. That helped lead to a second straight touchdown -- this one caught by left tackle Taylor Decker -- to draw within 38-22. Detroit now enters the final week of the season just one fourth-down attempt off the all-time record.mlive.com
Detroit Lions rule out Jared Goff in Seattle; go with Craig Reynolds over Jermar Jefferson again
The Detroit Lions announced on Sunday afternoon that quarterback Jared Goff has been officially ruled out against the Seattle Seahawks. After not playing last week because of a COVID infection, Goff didn’t practice this week because of a knee injury and was officially listed as doubtful in Seattle. Goff was lousy for most of the season, although the incoming quarterback class has fallen apart too. And Goff has played much better down the stretch, which has built some hope that perhaps the Lions could make things work with him after all. Seattle also is dealing with some injury issues, including downgrading top running back Alex Collins to out.mlive.com
Detroit Lions vs. Seattle Seahawks - NFL Week 17 (1/2/22) | Kickoff, How to Watch
After coming close to pulling out a come-from-behind victory last week, the Detroit Lions will try and bounce back as they stay on the road when they meet the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday afternoon. Seattle has a had a lackluster 2021 season, unable to find consistency even with Russell Wilson at the helm. It has been almost 10 years since Detroit beat Seattle, the last win for the Lions coming 2012. Check out more stories about the Detroit Lions here on MLive. Whopping 71% of early bettors taking Detroit Lions and the points against Seahawks in Week 17
The Action Network reports 71% of bettors are rolling with the Lions and the spread in Week 17. Goff missed the team’s first practice of the week, nursing the knee injury suffered in the upset win of the Arizona Cardinals in Week 15. The Lions quarterback missed last week’s loss in Atlanta while on the COVID list, getting activated to start the week. “I haven’t been able to be out there yet since the knee injury. Wilson missed three starts while dealing with surgery, with the Seahawks losing eight of 10 games since their 3-2 start.mlive.com
Amon-Ra St. Brown named NFL’s offensive rookie of the month, drawing yet more comparisons to Hines Ward.
ALLEN PARK -- There are only three wide receivers with more yards than Amon-Ra St. Brown in the month of December. St. Brown racked up 35 catches in the month of December, which was topped by only Kupp. On the very first day the pads came on in training camp, St. Brown picked a fight with defensive back Ifeatu Melifonwu. St. Brown, the 112th overall pick in this year’s draft, isn’t afraid to mix it up with anyone. “I tell people all the time, he reminds me a lot of Hines Ward,” Randle El said.mlive.com
Lions QB Jared Goff misses practice with knee injury suffered before landing on COVID list
ALLEN PARK -- Jared Goff continues to work his way through a knee injury suffered before landing on the COVID list, with the Detroit Lions quarterback not practicing at his first session back on Wednesday. Goff missed last week’s loss against the Atlanta Falcons, not clearing COVID protocols while dealing with self-proclaimed mild symptoms. The NFL Network reports Goff has been able to rehab the knee some, “but his status is clearly in some doubt for Sunday.”“Yeah, it’s still there,” Goff said. I could have had a ball to Josh (Reynolds), I think it was the third play of the game, second play of the game. Lions’ Dan Campbell regrets not using motion to get Tim Boyle better look before fateful interception
Lions quarterback Tim Boyle and the offense had the ball first-and-goal at the 9-yard line, trailing 20-16 with less than 60 seconds on the clock. Boyle threw an interception over the middle and to the right, intended for a heavily-covered Kalif Raymond in the end zone. Raymond broke from the slot for the middle of the end zone, with Boyle’s eyes locked, but Falcons linebacker Foyesade Oluokon made the interception on the timely read. I think little things like that. Tim Boyle was so much better for Detroit.mlive.com
QB Jared Goff coming off COVID list, but WR Josh Reynolds heading onto it for Lions
The Detroit Lions quarterback is coming off the COVID list just one day after missing the loss in Atlanta. Then after a fumble recovery, Boyle led the Lions to a first-and-goal from the 9-yard line with 39 seconds left. Detroit lost 20-16. Just as he’s coming off the field, top deep threat Josh Reynolds is going onto it, along with practice-squad quarterback Steven Montez. The Lions have now lost 17 players to the COVID list in the last two-plus weeks.mlive.com
Lion’s Dan Campbell explains why he settled for late field goal while trailing Falcons by 7 points
But facing a fourth-and-5 from Atlanta’s 8-yard line later on the drive, Campbell decided to lay up for the field goal despite trailing 20-13 with fewer than 3 minutes left in the game. The field goal would draw the Lions within four points, but would still require them to score another touchdown, the same position they were already in. After Riley Patterson chipped in the 26-yard field goal to pull Detroit within 20-16, linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin forced a fumble just three plays later on defense. But the ensuing drive stalled out when Tim Boyle threw an interception at the goal line in the final seconds, and the Lions fell by four points. Campbell defended his decision to settle for the field goal after the game.mlive.com
Lions grades: Amon-Ra St. Brown continues to breathe life into the offense, no matter the quarterback
The Detroit Lions (2-12-1) hung tough with the Atlanta Falcons (7-8), losing 20-16 in Week 16 action. Boyle tracked Kalif Raymond every step of the way, saying he misdiagnosed the coverage as zone, throwing the ball into harm’s way over the middle. He also missed Josh Reynolds, not to mention Amon-Ra St. Brown during an earlier trip to the red zone. NFL Next Gen Stats had Boyle averaging a solid 7.3 intended air yards per attempt. Still, he averaged four air yards per completion, highlighting his inconsistency when looking downfield.mlive.com
Tim Boyle was so much better for Detroit. But just 9 yards from victory, he made his worst mistake of the day.
Boyle wasn’t perfect on Sunday in Atlanta, but he was good enough to give the Lions a chance to win. But Boyle read man when he actually got a zone, and never saw linebacker Foyesade Oluokun float over the middle of the field. But the hole player, 54, did a really good job of tracking my eyes and I worked the right side. “I think the coaches did a really good job, kind of the quarterbacks in the room, they all did a really good job making sure I had a plan for every play. And I felt really good going to this game, I really did.mlive.com
Inside the locker room: Dan Campbell explains how he continues to see improvement from young Lions
Despite this, first-year head coach Dan Campbell can look on the bright side, and in some areas, it’s easy to see why. Detroit has improved on the third down and in the red zone, while its defense has continued to make big plays in key spots despite missing a handful of starters. Didn’t quite show up all the time today, but yet you look for improvement out of every player and every group. Ultimately it was the red zone, red zone hurt us. And they did in the red zone.”mlive.com
What’s being said nationally after Detroit Lions lose another heartbreaker in final minutes
The Detroit Lions (2-12-1) brought another game into the final minutes, with quarterback Tim Boyle throwing a late interception in their 20-16 loss to the Atlanta Falcons (7-8) in Week 16. Boyle started in place of quarterback Jared Goff, who could not clear COVID protocols after testing positive to start the week. Boyle and the Lions had their fair share of chances to take control of this one, or at least give themselves a better chance. When the Falcons took a 20-13 lead early in the fourth quarter, the Lions went down the field on a 17-play drive lasting 10 minutes, 26 seconds. Detroit took over at Atlanta’s 37-yard line, trailing 20-16 with a little more than two minutes on the clock.mlive.com
Halftime analysis: Dan Campbell’s fake punt (yes, another one) helps Lions score late TD
On Sunday, it helped power the Detroit Lions to a 10-10 halftime tie against the Atlanta Falcons despite flooding the field with backups on both sides of the field, including at quarterback. But guard Jonah Jackson jumped early, at least the fifth time Detroit has jumped early while lined up for fourth-and-short. Three plays later, quarterback Tim Boyle connected with rookie sensation Amon-Ra St. Brown on a 20-yard touchdown pass that gave Detroit a 10-7 lead late in the half. He had just 77 yards in his first start against Cleveland, and had the worst-rated day by a Lions quarterback since 2009. St. Brown has caught another six passes for 54 yards, plus the TD.mlive.com
Craig Reynolds in, Jermar Jefferson out at running back for Lions; D’Andre Swift missing fourth straight game
The club announced on Sunday morning that running back Craig Reynolds will dress for a third straight game on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons. With D’Andre Swift battling a shoulder injury, the Lions elevated Reynolds from their practice squad to help them get through games against Denver and Arizona. Reynolds will play over rookie seventh-round pick Jermar Jefferson, who is not dressing against the Falcons. D’Andre Swift also won’t dress for the game due to a shoulder injury he suffered on Thanksgiving against Chicago. He’s missing his fourth straight game with the injury, but did practice last week, which suggests he could still return this season.mlive.com
Detroit Lions at Atlanta Falcons: Matchups to watch, key questions heading into Week 16
The Detroit Lions are headed south after the holidays, drawing the Atlanta Falcons in Week 16 action set for the day after Christmas. He’s run 37 times for 195 yards in two games off the practice squad, getting signed to the main roster this past week. Godwin Igwebuike has had the fumble struggles in recent weeks, while Jermar Jefferson hasn’t played double-digit snaps since Week 8. “Last couple weeks, he’s been unbelievable,” Taylor Decker said after last week’s win. Jalen Reeves-Maybin made his return to the lineup after a two-game absence last week, playing a season-high 72 defensive snaps.mlive.com
Lions WR Trinity Benson lands on COVID list, Amani Oruwariye misses another practice
The Detroit Lions announced on Thursday they’re moving Benson to the COVID list, the 15th player they’ve lost to a positive infection in the last two weeks. The Lions liked him so much they decided to give up fifth- and seventh-round picks for Benson, rather than risk not getting him on the waiver wire. He’s been a healthy scratch for most of the second half of the season despite Detroit’s depth issues at receiver. The Lions also practiced without top cornerback Amani Oruwariye for a second straight day on Thursday. Oruwariye, who just intercepted his sixth pass, is dealing with a thumb injury.mlive.com

About 60% of bettors rolling with Detroit Lions to cover growing spread against Atlanta Falcons
ALLEN PARK -- Bettors trust the Lions to cover the spread once more, with 60% of the early action going toward Detroit to keep it within six points against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 16. Detroit (2-11-1) remains one of the better teams in the league against the spread, going 9-5 in that department, trailing only the Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys in the standings. They’re one of the worst against the spread, going 5-8 to this point. Last week, the Lions thrashed one of the NFC’s best, handling the Arizona Cardinals 30-12 from Ford Field. He’s hoping his second start, expected to come on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons, goes a little better. “In my opinion, it’s kind of night and day,” Boyle said. All of which is to say it wasn’t exactly ideal conditions for him to start his first NFL game. “But as every week progresses, and every day progresses, it gets better and better.”Now, the Lions just might need him again.mlive.com
Detroit Lions QB Jared Goff officially active for Thanksgiving game
DETROIT -- Jared Goff is back. The Detroit Lions officially activated their starting quarterback 90 minutes before kicking off on Thanksgiving against the Chicago Bears. Goff’s return is a nice boost for the Lions’ chances of snapping the NFL’s longest winless streak, which dates back nearly a year. Goff has endured a difficult first season in Detroit, but backup Tim Boyle was even worse in a spot start against the Browns on Sunday. The Lions threatened late again, but Goff missed an open Amon-Ra St. Brown on fourth-and-1 deep in Chicago territory to seal the loss.mlive.com

ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions (0-9-1) and Chicago Bears (3-7) feature two of the most toothless offenses around heading into Thanksgiving. Swift ran 33 times for 130 yards, making him the first Lions running back to notch consecutive 100-yard games in 17 years. ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions (0-9-1) host the Chicago Bears (3-7) on Thanksgiving for the second time in three years in Week 12 action. Detroit’s passing attack has continued to hit new lows, not showing much reason for optimism heading into Thursday’s game against the Bears. Whether it’s Jared Goff or Tim Boyle under center, the Lions are going to need another explosive outing from Swift. QB Tim Boyle confident he’ll show improvement if Lions need him to make second start on Thanksgiving
ALLEN PARK -- Tim Boyle was expected to make the second start of his career on the short Thanksgiving week, but it sounds like Jared Goff has a real chance to return for the Detroit Lions. I’m not disappointed in him,” Lions coach Dan Campbell said of Boyle after last week’s game. It was the second time in his career Goff has missed a game due to injury. Dan Campbell says Lions QB Jared Goff is looking and feeling better after throwing to open the week
ALLEN PARK -- It sounds like Jared Goff has a chance to return after missing only one game, with Dan Campbell saying the quarterback is looking and feeling better after throwing to open the week. “Yeah, we weren’t just playing catch like out in the backyard since it’s Thanksgiving week,” Campbell joked. His passer rating of 34.1 was the worst by a starting Lions quarterback since Drew Stanton started in place of an injured Matthew Stafford 12 years ago. “We’ll see where Goff is at and then assess Tim,” Campbell said after the loss in Cleveland. “Here’s what I do know, if Tim does (play next week), he’s going to be better than he was today.mlive.com
Detroit Lions upgrade Jared Goff to limited on estimated practice report; Justin Fields out for Bears
ALLEN PARK -- Tim Boyle just turned in the worst-rated game by any Lions starting quarterback since 2009. The Lions have upgraded Jared Goff to limited on their estimated practice report on Monday afternoon. The report was estimated because Detroit didn’t actually practice, but the league requires them to file one anyway because of the Thanksgiving game in three days against the Chicago Bears. That’s the worst rating by a Lions starting quarterback since Drew Stanton’s starting debut for an injured Matthew Stafford in 2009. Rookie Justin Fields was listed as out on their estimated practice report, along with important starters like defensive lineman Akiem Hicks and receiver Allen Robinson, while pass rusher Khalil Mack has already been placed on injured reserve.mlive.com

Lions grades: Passing attack continues to reach new lows while defense once again delivers
CLEVELAND -- The Detroit Lions lost 13-10 to the Cleveland Browns in Week 11, with the passing attack hitting new lows amid another strong showing from their defense. Boyle’s second interception came on a deep shot for Josh Reynolds, with Browns cornerback Denzel Ward making a play. CLEVELAND -- The Detroit Lions (0-9-1) lost 13-10 to the Cleveland Browns (6-5) while failing to break into the red zone in Week 11. The Lions quarterback took full blame for the miscue, saying he thought Swift would stop and sit where he was before the move inside. That’s on me.”It’s worth noting this wasn’t just Boyle’s first start, but his first action in nearly three months. Lions coach Dan Campbell defends conservative playcalling, decision-making in loss to Browns
And he did it again on that critical third-and-14, calling for a D’Andre Swift draw play up the middle. Now Campbell is coming under some fire for his conservative decision-making in the game. He defended the strategy, saying it was designed to protect fill-in quarterback Tim Boyle against that fearsome Cleveland pass rush. As Boyle acquires more experience, Campbell said he might be willing to open up the playcalling and decision making. CLEVELAND -- The Detroit Lions are back in the losing column, with another toothless showing through the air in their 13-10 loss on the road against the Cleveland Browns in Week 11. Detroit’s offense didn’t reach the red zone once, with Boyle’s longest pass going for 24 yards to tight end T.J. Hockenson. This loss moves Detroit’s winless streak to 14 games, with the Lions failing to score 20 points in all but one game this season. This offense has scored more than 20 points only once, needing two successful onside kicks and a pair of two-point conversions in their Week 1 loss. Chubb ran 22 times for 130 yards, putting the game on ice with three first-down runs down the stretch.mlive.com
Instant observations: Tim Boyle passes for just 77 yards in another loss for Detroit Lions
Boyle finished just 15 of 23 passing for 77 yards, just one week after Goff passed for just 54 yards in regulation against Pittsburgh. But after a pass to running back Godwin Igwebuike lost 4 yards on second down, the Lions were facing a third-and-14. If you’re wondering how Boyle could pass for just 77 yards, one week after Goff passed for 54 in regulation, well, that’s it. -- I’ve covered every Lions game since 2013, which means I’ve seen some dumb stuff in my day. He’s averaged 49.0 gross yards and 43.9 net yards per attempt, both of which are NFL records through 100 attempts.mlive.com
Marshalls opens its first online store
The discount retailer has done just fine without an online store, but now is finally launching one. The latter has had an online store for several years. Neil Saunders, managing director at GlobalData Retail, told CNN Business that an online store for Marshalls was likely low on TJX's list because it was focused on expanding its profitable physical locations. He cautioned that TJX be careful that its online store doesn't cannibalize its stores. "One of the key things about the off-price model is that people will bargain hunt in a physical stores, which doesn't always translate online," he said.
Merriam-Webster adds nonbinary pronoun 'they' to its dictionary
Tim Boyle/Getty Images(CNN) - Merriam-Webster has officially added the nonbinary pronoun "they" as an entry in its dictionary. Merriam-Webster uses the word in a sentence as an example: "I knew certain things about ... the person I was interviewing.... Merriam-Webster also notes it has evidence in its files of the nonbinary "they" dating back to 1950, and that it's likely there are earlier uses of the nonbinary pronoun out there. Tim Boyle/Getty ImagesMOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. - Authorities say a South Carolina man ran back into his burning home to save his wife before both of them died from smoke inhalation. Mount Pleasant police released new information Friday into the deaths of 80-year-old Donnie Caston and 75-year-old Linda Caston. Their son, Timothy, told The Post and Courier that Donnie Caston ran from the Sept. 5 fire and urged a neighbor to call 911 before he dashed back into the home. He says firefighters arrived to find Donnie Caston collapsed at the bottom of the home's stairs, and Linda Caston unconscious in an upstairs bedroom. A split tree and scorched area in the small backyard suggest the fire might have been caused by a lightning strike as Hurricane Dorian swept past the area.

RI diocese publishes list of 50 clerics accused of sex abuse
Tim Boyle/Getty Images(CNN) - A Roman Catholic diocese in Providence, Rhode Island, published a list of clergy members accused of sexually abusing minors. The list, published at the end of June, contains 50 names of deacons, clergy members and priests who have been accused, along with their ages and whether they resigned, died or were removed from the ministry. In a letter published Friday, Bishop of Providence Thomas Tobin outlined two reasons for publishing the list: a societal expectation and church members' right to know. The list's publication comes at a tumultuous time for the Catholic Church, which is at the center of an international sex abuse scandal. States across the country have begun investigations into the Catholic Church.
