A sorted affair: How Michigan Stadium waste gets recycled after a home game

ANN ARBOR, MI — On any given Sunday the morning after a University of Michigan home football game, the Big House is crawling with hundreds of volunteers. Food trays, napkins, coffee lids, soda cups, cheese cups and lids, deli wraps, popcorn bags, spoons, forks, knives, straws and food waste are all compostable. They carry mostly blue and green bags, and just a couple of black trash bags, Dunlop said. To put it in perspective, the waste generated at seven home football games per year amounts to only a fraction of a percent of UM’s overall waste, Dunlop said. Michigan cancels rivalry football game vs. Ohio State due to rising COVID-19 cases

The University of Michigan announced Tuesday that they have canceled their annual rivalry football game against Ohio State this weekend after more COVID-19 cases. The University of Michigan Athletic Department said that an increasing number of positive COVID-19 cases and student-athletes in quarantine over the past week will result in the cancellation of Saturday’s scheduled game at Ohio State. Unfortunately, we will not be able to field a team due to COVID-19 positives and the associated quarantining required of close contact individuals. The team canceled their game against Maryland last weekend. The last time Michigan and Ohio State didn’t play was 1917.

University of Michigan to allow some student-athletes back to campus this week for voluntary workouts

ANN ARBOR, Mich. The University of Michigan Athletic Department will be allowing football, mens basketball and womens basketball student-athletes back to campus this week if they want to participate in voluntary strength and conditioning workouts. Currently, those are the only three sports allowed by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) to participate in voluntary summer workouts. "We continue to take the utmost care to ensure that all student-athletes and staff return to a safe and healthy environment. The process for reopening the athletic campus for student-athletes includes a 14-day pre-report risk assessment, six-day resocialization period and daily risk assessments, including temperature checks. The second phase of returning student-athletes to campus includes sports that compete in the fall.
