The Windsor Spitfires beat the Firebirds 4-0 in Game 7 of the OHL Western Conference Finals to capture the Wayne Gretzky Trophy and earn a date in the championship series against the Hamilton Bulldogs. After scoring two goals in Tuesday’s 3-2 overtime victory in Game 6, Daniel D’Amico bagged a hat trick in the decisive game to lead Windsor. Matthew Maggio scored Windsor’s other goal. Windsor goaltender Xavier Medina stopped all 38 shots the Firebirds sent his way while counterpart Luke Cavallin, who was brilliant in Flint’s Game 6 loss, finished with 32 saves.

A former Detroit Red Wing delivered the biggest goal in the playoffs for the Colorado Avalanche on Friday. The Avalanche, seeking their first Cup since 2001, face the Edmonton Oilers in the Western Conference finals in a series that begins on Tuesday. The Red Wings drafted Helm in the fifth round in 2005 (132nd overall). He played 744 games in parts of 14 seasons with the Red Wings before signing a one-year, $1 million contract with the Avalanche last offseason. The last time a Flint team played for a championship was in 2010, when the Flint Generals lost to the Fort Wayne Komets in the International Hockey League finals. Flint Firebirds strike first in Game 1 of second-round OHL playoff series

FLINT – The Flint Firebirds scored the only two goals of the first period and added three more in the third period of 5-3 victory over the Soo Greyhounds in Game 1 of their best-of-7 Western Conference semifinal series at the Dort Financial Center. Coulson Pietre scored twice for the Firebirds and captain Brennan Othmann added a goal and three assists for Flint. Dmitry Kuzmin also had three assists for Flint, which will host Game 2 Sunday. Jack Thompson scored twice for Soo and Kalvyn Watson tallied once. Soo outshot the Firebirds 58-31 and Flint was 2-for-3 on the power play.

Virus concerns hit Dallas, Columbus as NHL season looms

The NHL said Friday that six Dallas Stars players and two staff members have tested positive for COVID-19 in a development that will push back the opener for the defending Western Conference champions by nearly a week. The Columbus Blue Jackets also held a number of players off the ice “out of abundance of caution” in another reminder that the pandemic will likely play havoc with the season opening next Wednesday. Dallas had been set to open the season Jan. 14 at Florida. The Dallas players and staff are self-isloating and the team’s training facilities were closed for the next several days amid contact tracing. The NHL has shortened the regular season to 56 games for each of its 31 teams, who will play only division foes and sometimes multiple times in a matter of a few days.
