New laws look to overhaul Michiganโs parole, probation system
Gretchen Whitmer has signed new legislation into law that will overhaul the stateโs parole and probation system. โThe package of legislation included three very important reforms to supervision, to probation and to parole,โ Haney said. Those laws aim to reshape the stateโs probation and parole system and help thousands of people. What these reforms do is that they seek to make probation and parole more just and more effective,โ Haney said. The new set of laws will reduce adult felony probation sentences in Michigan from five years to three years and prevent endless extensions on misdemeanor and felony probation terms.

Michigan Court of Appeals orders immediate release of 15-year-old Grace'
DETROIT On Friday, the emergency motion for immediate release was granted for a 15-year-old known as Grace by the Michigan Court of Appeals. The Michigan teen had been detained for not completing her online homework, a condition of her parole. Even celebrities called for the teens release. Democratic Michigan Congressman, Andy Levin, who first called on the court to review the case after the story broke sent a statement on her release. In the interim, they are both extremely and deeply appreciative of the outpouring of support from around the country, and for Graces release; she is anxious to be with her family.Democratic Congresswoman Debbie Dingell Tweeted on the teens release.

Tina Talbot was convicted of murdering her husband in 2018, but she claimed it came after years of abuse. Officials said she shot and killed her husband, Milosz Szczepanowicz, because he abused her and her son with special needs. DETROIT โ Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy is seeking victims of prisoners who will soon be paroled so they can be properly notified. According to the Wayne County Prosecutorโs Office, MDOC began sending letters to the office early last month about paroling prisoners because of the COVID-19 outbreak. In any given month, MDOC paroles just under 700 prisoners a month. During the COVID-19 pandemic, itโs over 700 and closer to 800.
