Man arrested in road rage shooting that shut down I-94 in Ypsilanti

YPSILANTI, Mich. – A 25-year-old man from Belleville was arrested Thursday, Feb. 22, after a road rage shooting closed down the eastbound lanes of I-94 in Ypsilanti.

According to authorities, the incident started in Saline when the suspect cut off the victim on Michigan Avenue. Police said when they got on I-94, the victim passed the suspect, who began tailgating them. When the victim slowed, police said the man pulled alongside them and waved a gun out the window, causing the victim to speed off in an attempt to evade them.

When the man from Belleville got alongside the victim again, police said he first the gun at the victim’s vehicle, hitting it twice. The driver was not injured.

When fleeing the scene, the man from Belleville sped off, lost control of the vehicle and crashed. He ran off but was taken into custody by Washtenaw County sheriff’s deputies shortly after. He was lodged at the Washtenaw County Jail on felonious assault, reckless discharge of a weapon from a moving vehicle, carrying a concealed weapon and felony firearm.

Police recovered a gun from the scene registered to the man, but he did not possess a concealed weapon permit.

The victim, a 42-year-old man from Manchester, was not injured.

The eastbound lanes of I-94 between US-23 and Rawsonville Road were closed for several hours following the shooting.
