BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A driver who was caught going the wrong way on a busy road in Oakland County admitted that he drank a $4 bottle of wine before getting behind the wheel, police said.

Bloomfield Township police said they received several 911 calls around 9 p.m. April 28, 2024, about a white Volvo heading south in the northbound lanes of Telegraph Road near Long Lake Road.

Officers said they first spotted the car as it approached Quarton Road, still heading in the wrong direction.

Police turned on their emergency lights and tried to alert the several drivers who were heading north on Telegraph Road. As the Volvo passed, it was moving at about 50 mph, cops said.

The Volvo almost struck another car and continued heading south in the northbound lanes before finally pulling over for officers.

The 55-year-old Wixom man driving the Volvo smelled of alcohol and spoke with slurred speech, officials said. He admitted to drinking a $3.99 bottle of Bay Bridge wine before getting behind the wheel, according to authorities.

The man failed sobriety tests and was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. He agreed to a breath test, which revealed a .18 blood-alcohol content -- more than twice the legal limit.

He was held overnight at the Bloomfield Township Police Department and released with an appearance ticket.
