Winter weather advisory in effect for Metro Detroit: What to know

Advisory in effect at 12 p.m Friday

Detroit – Happy New Year from all of us at Local 4 News Today!

Watch out, we have a little bit of patchy fog around Metro Detroit, and with temps in the mid 20s, that fog can also make things slick on the roadways. Otherwise, it’s partly to mostly cloudy and chilly. Bundle up as you head out and about this Friday morning.

New Year’s Day storm

A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect for all of Southeast Michigan for several inches of snow in our North Zone, and icy concerns for most of Metro Detroit.

We should see snow showers and freezing rain possible late morning through this afternoon. Some areas could see a tenth of an inch of ice forming. That will make for horrendous travel and sporadic power outages. The sooner we see temps above freezing, the better we will be, but that might not be until after lunchtime.

Do yourself a favor, and just stay safe at home. The advisories are in effect through Saturday morning.

Weekend weather

We will also see some sleet mixing in with the snow and freezing rain through this Friday afternoon and evening. But, we should see mostly snow and rain switching to primarily snow overnight.

Most of Metro Detroit will be covered with a nice coating of snow Saturday morning. The snow will come to an end by 8am. Then, mostly cloudy with highs in the upper 30s. There’s another wintry mix moving through Sunday morning with additional snow likely. Sunday snow showers end leaving us again, mostly cloudy, and mild with highs in the upper 30s.

First week of 2021

Our first week of 2021 looks favorable for us with highs flirting with 40F or warmer next week, and mostly dry Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. There appears to be another wintry mix moving in Thursday.
