Metro Detroit weather: Friday snowflakes -- no joke

April Fool’s Day highs in mid-40s, feeling colder

DETROITGood Saturday morning!

Just kidding.

It’s April Fool’s Day, the first day of April, and we are seeing some snow this Friday morning, but it’s very light and not widespread. We’ll have light snow showers and flurries through the morning under cloudy skies.

Temperatures hang in the lower 30s with wind chills in the mid-20s as you head out and about.

The snow is moving into and through our North Zone this morning with more bands of snow trending north, so streets are certainly more slippery north of M-59. Little bits and pieces of light snow are possible for us all as we go through the morning commute, but it’s pretty scattered early on.

Today’s sunrise is at 7:16 a.m.

A few snowflakes will linger this morning, but it’s not a major player in our forecast today, as we stay on the cooler side.

Skies will be mostly cloudy with flakes and flurries early, and then partly sunny through the afternoon. A gusty wind will move WNW at 7-17 mph, gusting to 20-25 mph at times, and that will be a factor in how to prepare for today.

Highs will hang in the mid-40s, but the wind chills will be in the upper 20s to low 30s. Sp, the thicker coat is a good idea today.

The winds from the west or northwest will try and keep clouds with some snowflakes coming and going, so we will be watching radar all day and encourage you to do the same -- especially if you are traveling north and northwest through Pure Michigan. The snow will be a bit more problematic across the Northern Lower Peninsula.

Today’s sunset is at 7:59 p.m.

Cool start, then some wet weather

Saturday will be a chilly start around Metro Detroit as lows will dip down into the mid and upper 20s under partly cloudy skies.

Most of Saturday is looking good, though, with partly cloudy skies becoming partly sunny. Highs will be near 50 degrees, and the winds relax, moving SSE at 5-10 mph.

Clouds will increase through the late afternoon and evening with some light rain showers possible in the evening. Then, we’ll have rain and snow showers late Saturday and into early Sunday, with a dusting of snow possible in a few spots on grassy surfaces.

Most of your Sunday looks dry after some morning snow showers and lows in the low-to-mid 30s. Skies will be slow to clear on Sunday, which means we’ll be mostly cloudy -- and that may keep our high temps in the upper 40s. There is a chance we’ll get into the low 50s with some late afternoon sunshine.

Warmer days ahead (sort of)

We may see a light wintry mix Monday morning as we head back to work and school. We will keep you posted.

Temperatures will gradually warm next week from the upper 40s and low 50s Monday, and to the mid-50s by Tuesday. We do expect rain showers on and off Monday, which will keep those temps down a bit.

Tuesday will be dry until the evening hours, when rain showers return. Those will linger into Wednesday, when temperatures have a shot at 60 degrees.

There is a shot of colder air coming in for the end of next week, and that could make for a raw home opener for your Detroit Tigers next Friday -- stay tuned!
