4Warn Weather - The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for the Lower Peninsula, including Southeast Michigan, until 8 p.m. Monday.
What This Means
This watch means that severe weather could occur verses a severe thunderstorm warning, which happens when the strong storm is occurring.
Think of it like baking a cake - a watch is having all of the ingredients, which may or may not turn out to be a good cake. We could see strong storms, but we may not. A warning would be the baked cake - it’s happening.
Risk for Severe Storms
The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Slight Risk, a level 2 out of 5, for severe weather Monday.
As mentioned above, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch has also been issued. Severe storms are already occurring on the west side of the state.
Timing and Main Storm Hazards
The main time frame for severe weather Monday will be between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m.
All storm hazards are possible, including damaging winds, large hail, heavy rain, and isolated tornadoes.
Storms will move from west to east across Southeast Michigan.
What To Do Right Now
Now is when you should be preparing for the possibility of severe thunderstorms. Stay weather aware, make sure you have a way to get alerts, and know where you need to go if it becomes necessary to take shelter.
Looking Ahead
Southeast Michigan has the chance for severe storms again Tuesday. Just like today, the Storm Prediction Center has issued a Slight Risk for severe weather Tuesday.
